I have a 2006 Honda VTX 1300 Retro Cruiser and bought it used with 2300 miles on it. Of course, the previous owner said he had no problems with it, and I can believe him because we have been friends for quite some time now. But, when I get it up to 50 - 55 miles per hour, I feel a vibration as if I have a knot in the tire. I have checked the tires and they appear alright.

These Bikes have been found to have some ballance problems due to the Tubed Tires, the tube can move if the tyre presure has gone down at all. Check for original tyres as the tyres were only made for this bike and are difficult to get so some people have fitted Tubeless tyres with a tube inside. The other problem is the front suspension is very soft and feels any road problems. David Belcher is also correct about the head bearings not being done when the bike is serviced.

Try adjusting the steering neck bearings. They should have been tightened at the 600 mile check up, but most mechanics short cut and skip the adjustment. Take off the handle bars and the upper triple clamp and tighten the "steering stem nut"/"neck bearings" almost to binding, then back it off a tiny bit. You may want to run your tire pressure around 34-34 PSI to help get more even tire wear.
