Bike is running very hot, sounds like the engine will not decelerate. Engine is reving while stopped. Engine light has come on.

sounds like a vacuum leak. you can use a can of carb cleaner and spray it around the intake to see if it is. the engine will mostlikely lower rpm or stall when you spray the spot with the leak

Check for any splits on the rubber intake sleeve.this is what connects the carb to the bike.If this does not rectify the fault then strip down and clean the carb jets especially the idle jet as it may be slightly blocked causeing such symptoms.good luck

SOURCE: 2001 r6 keeps pushing all the water out of the expansion tank and when hot does not want to run

Possibly has air in the coolant system causing the coolant to boil. You can flush the whole thing if your coolant is in need, but mainly open the radiator cap and shake all hoses to release air while adding more coolant. Also may be the radiator cap spring (maybe). I am not sure about why it will not start up... maybe a sensor will not allow it.

* I am not certified in anyway and have minimal knowledge, my 05 r6 had air in the coolant and would boil out of the overflow. Make sure you use distilled water to avoid corrosion.

The popping at idle and deceleration (when the throttle is in the idle position) could be a lean mixture at idle.
A lean mixture sitting at idle for a long light would cause the engine to run hot.
Also, as the engine reaches operating temperatures, the idle will pick up.

Engine is hunting at tickover

Check the float needle valve for smooth (sticky free) operation. If the needle valve does not stop the flow of fuel into the bowl, it will spill into the intake and rev the engine. Check also the overflow tubes. If the overflow tubes are plugged the problem will show up as reving, if they're open, check for fuel leakage under the bike when running.

Neddle valves aren't expensive to replace but they sure are annoying when the stop working correctly.

Check the floats when you have it apart to make sure they aren't filling with fuel.
