1979 Suzuki GS 750 E oil filter bolt/nut stripped

I tried changing my oil on my 79 gs750 and I stripped either the acorn nut or the bolt on the front panel that holds the oil filter in. What should I do to fix it and where can I find parts?

SOURCE: broken oil filter bolt

What you need to do depends on where the bolt broke. Is there enough of a stem left to get a pair fo vise grips on it? If so, then go to "Plan A". If not then do "Plan B" etc...

  • "Plan A"...Put some WD40 on the stem and keep the stem damp for an hour or so. Intermittently tap the stem lightly with a plastic screwdriver handle to set up vibrations. Now wipe the stem and break out your Weller soldering gun. Heat the stem with the gun for about 5 minutes. Now put the vise grips on the stem (at a right angle if possible) clamp down tight and see if the stem will screw out. A bit stronger tapping while trying to turn would be good.
  • "Plan B"... Cut off what is left of the stem and grind to a flat surface parallel to the case mounting flange. Center punch the bolt then drill out the center of the bolt. Use a drill bit smaller than the bolt and DRILL CAREFULLY. Drilling at a bad angle can mean drilling into the case. That's a no - no. Use a screw extractor to remove the remnants of the bolt.
  • "Plan C"... Okay, the drill went in at an angle and some of the threads were destroyed or the case got pretty well drilled. Use a tap and die set for re-tapping the old threads back to the original thread. Put in a new bolt and see if the cover plate will seal up when mounted. If so, you are done.
  • "Plan D"... Remove the bolt but leave the cover in place. Now determine if it would work to drill the cover plate and case at the same time then thread the larger case hole for a larger bolt.
  • "Plan E"... So plan "D" is not viable. Would Liquid steel fill the hole such that it could be drilled and tapped?
  • "Plan F"... Take the bike to a machine shop and let them do the bolt removal. I endorse this plan if you lack tools and really don't want to risk doing it yourself.

SOURCE: oil filter

On the front of the motor at the bottom just behind the front tire. The oil filter is inside the housing. There are three small nuts and one bolt to remove before you can get to the oil filter. Either has a charging rotor problem, stator problem, or regulator rectifier problem. Get a manual and trouble shoot.

SOURCE: rear wheel removal & oil filter cap w/stripped bolts

Very common issue with the small oil filter cap bolt--you can get a 15mm one off ebay for a few dollars. To get the one off that's stripped, you might try the vice grips, but I'd bet the vice grips contintue to turn that nut into a small spindle before breaking off. IF that does happen, just drill into the end of the nut, it's hollow just a short bit inside, then you can use a larger EZOut on it.

Other things to try--quick spots of heat, like a small pencil torch or propane torch, just on the filter cover--not long, only a couple seconds--the aluminum heats quick and then starts heating the bolt, yu don't want the bolt to heat.

Another trick, try to TIGHTEN the bolt, if you can seat it another 32nd of a turn, that'll break the threads free.

I have Suzuki gs 750 e, model 1979. The engine is an air-cooled, 4-cylinder,4-cycle model equipped withdual overhead camshafts. I am looking for new camshafts for the engine. Do gs 1000 and 1100...

The simple answer is no. It is possible to put a complete 1000 engine into the 750. but this will involve making brackets etc.
Proberbly the easiest way to more power is to fit the barrells and top end from the GS850. This will fit straight on. Ideally, you will need the 850's carb, but the 750s could be jetted to suit. The exhaust is the same fittings, so you could retain the gs750 exhaust as well. They also share the same airbox.
