hi ther this is straight out of the vfr 400 manual so bear with me..
the measured clearence of a no.1 cylinder inlet valve is 0.20mm, so b =0.20.
the specified clearence range for an inlet valve is 0.12 to 0.18 mm the mid point being 0.15. so c=0.15
the thickness of the existing shim is 2.200mm, so d=2.2
therefore the required replcement shim a = 0.20-0.15 +2.2 (a=2.25mm) hope this helps

Not sure about clearance levels, but can tell you there is no English manual for the XJR 400 - only Japanese. Try the XJR owners club. It's full of troubleshooting questions answered in the forums.
