Do i need to drain old oil before toping up new

You would be better off to drain the oil this time. The first 500 miles on a bike is going to break it in. All sorts of metal parts "polish" up during break in. It would be best to rid the bike of the old oil.

Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. If in a hot area like Texas or New Mexico go with 20w50.

No third gear

You have a bent shift fork not engaging the slider gear dogs fully into 3rd gear. The engine will need to come out of the bike. Remove the top end, the flywheel and electrics, the clutch, shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to get to the crankshaft, gears and shift forks.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter, torque wrench and factory service manual, plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it". I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project and now they have a knowing eye working on the engine.

A “very helpful” rating on this answer? Thanks!

Motor starts but cut out after a couple of minutes

I've had the same problem mate.

Engineer thinks it's the carburettor or electrics. Bike's off to the dealership for repairal under warranty. Your bike should still have it's warranty provided you haven't made any engine mods, in which case it should just go back to the dealer and they're obliged to fix it free of charge.
Firstly though, if your bike is less than a year old you'll still have Yamaha Breakdown Cover which came free of charge with the bike. Call them on 0800246855 UK. They'll send an engineer out to take a look and try to solve the problem on the spot, if they can't they'll take it to your nearest dealer, free of charge.
If your free 1yrs breakdown cover has expired, it's worth paying the £70 when you phone them to carry it on. They're service is phenominal.

Hope this helps and let me know how you get on.

My 9 month old Yamaha YZF-R125 has been cutting

Sounds like you have either got water in the system or poor connections.
You can use something like dielectric grease on each connector. It is a bit of a pain having to open and close each connector on your bike, but once you've done it, you shouldn't need to do it again for a long, long time.

1986 yamaha big wheel 80

I believe the spark is too week, high tension sparks should be crisp fat and blue with a hint of orange, a weak spark could be the result of a faulty ignition generator or coil, sometimes the spark is controlled by a Capacitor, when these break down the spark will be out of 'Kilter' the Yeti... also check main and starting jets as well as any fuel diagrahms, good luck the YETI

Servicing the bike

depends on how hard you ride it, if you thrash it everywhere then i would be looking at yearly services if doing them yourself, if you are keeping up the service history then the usual is yearly. but much cheaper and easier to do yourself. also you know more about your bike do's and dont's n stuff.

Yamaha timberwolf wont start unless push started

You have a loose connection to the ignition system . When cranking make sure it is in neutral. and kill switch is in run position. The only thing dropping would sensibly affect is the fuel system or jarring a switch., but with the suspension you have there really is no jarring. So, I would ck the wiring. something is loose.
