The Nikon D80 was released August 2006, now thirteen years old; thus in camera years quite old. When I owned my D80 it was outstanding camera used on many pro shoots. Please recall, all digital cameras are disposable, when the electronics go out dispose of it, having it fixed will cost more than expected and certainly not worth the effort nor cost. The SB-800 is a wonderful flash, had a few used them on many shoots. The mode button could be internally stuck not making it connection, or perhaps broken, You could take it apart see if there is some type of obstruction and the like under the button. Or send it to a service technician. The SB-800 continue commanding a high price, getting it fixed is to me well worth the cost.

Before you consider returning the camera, try using better quality batteries, or re-chargeable ones. Problems such as this are more usually caused by batteries than the camera.
