Salton RA5 5-Cup Rice Cooker Questions & Answers
Lost my instruction book...want instructions
I have a Toastmaster 3 cup rice cooker but think the ratio would be the same.
Long grain white rice - 2 rice measuring cups - water to 2 cup line = 8 (1/2 cup) servings
3 rice measuring cups - water to 3 cup line = 12 (1/2 cup) servings
Long grain brown rice - 1 1/2 Rice measuring cups - water to 3 cup line - 6 (1/2 cup) servings
For fluffy rice: After cooker shuts off, allow rice to stand for approx. 15 minutes, covered, before serving.
Hope this helps
Maunual for Hamilton Beach Scovill Culture Center yogurt maker?
I have this model, the 726 orange rectangular model. The hour reminder is just a little piece of plastic that hooks onto the outside, and yes it should move easily. I don't know why yours doesn't, but since it doesn't go inside and touch anything edible, maybe you can try to grease it. You don't need to put any water in the 'wells'. My model has little round seats for the cups, but they're not deep enough for water; they are about 1 or 2 millimeters deep. you also don't need to put water in the main compartment. hope this helps. I see it's been 8 months since this posting.
Yogurt Maker plastic lids
I just picked up a used GM5 at a thrift store, and 2 of the lids say "Ball", a popular brand used for canning. I would bet they are replacement lids, so that is where I would start looking. In the event that no replacement can be found, I would give "Press and Seal" plastic wrap a shot. The stuff is AMAZING.
Now, I have no manual for my machine, and I hear you do.... if I were to ask nicely, would you send a copy my way? Please?
Yogurt
Your yogurt machine is pretty much just an incubator. You can google for yogurt recipes, then you just turn it on, or hit start or set the timer or whatever.
Can I use boxed rice mixes in my rice cooker?
I made some Zatarrain's red beans and rice a couple of days ago and it came out fine.
My real question is what is the advantage of a rice cooker over a simple pot and wind up timer? My rice cooker sticks and has to be stirred, and it does not shut off automatically when the rice is done, or at least I stopped it early since it was done and not shut off. If I had waited the whole time it might have burned.
But, boxed rice should be no different than all the rice cooker meal recipes with meat and vegatables that get steamed.
Just follow the recommended water amount on the box.
But, you have to make sure that your rice cooker is big enough to hold the finished quantity on the box. If not, you may only be able to make 1/2 a box.

Basic Yogurt Recipe
4 cups (1 quart) milk - whole, 2 %, 1% or skim
1/4 - 1/2 cup instant non-fat dry milk powder
1/2 cup plain yogurt (with live cultures) or yogurt from a previous batch
- In
a saucepan, combine milk and dry milk and heat over medium heat,
stirring frequently to just below the boiling point. Remove the milk
from heat and allow to cool until lukewarm (about 100 degrees). To cool
the milk quickly, place the saucepan into the refrigerator or a sink of
cold water, stirring occasionally to cool evenly. This takes about 20
minutes.
- Pre-warm the yogurt
maker's heating base by plugging the cord into an electrical outlet.
The signal light will glow when base is plugged in.
- Add
plain yogurt to the warm milk, stirring gently to blend. Do not beat or
whip. Pour the mixture into the yogurt container, secure the lid and
place the covered container into the heating base. Cover the Yogurt
Maker and process undisturbed and out of drafts for 4-10 hours,
depending on tartness desired. Yogurt should be partially set after
processing and will thicken further after refrigeration.
- After
processing, unplug the cord from the outlet. Remove the cover and lift
the covered yogurt container out of the heating base. Place the
container in the refrigerator and chill at least two hours to thicken.
If desired, remove 1/2 cup of the yogurt to use as a starter for future
batches, before adding any fruit or flavoring. Keep yogurt refrigerated
until use.
