How can I fix a Salton KM386 stand mixer that has lost half of its' power?

It may need new carbon brushes in the motor, but whether you can get them is another matter. Phone their service department. You may also have lubrication issues that is slowing it down.SALTON CANADACustomer Service Department 81A Brunswick Dollard-des-Ormeaux Quebec, Canada H9B 2J5Website: www.salton.comManual, just because I found ithttps://www.salton.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/KM-386-IB-ENweb.pdfhttps://www.google.com/search?q=salton+km386+replacement+carbon+brushes..

The top of the mixer began shaking and thumping

Tip the machine upside down on a towel, centralise the hinge pin and tighten the grub screw that locks it into place. This is right up inside the pedestal, there is only one screw there to see. Now stand it up and fit the mixing bowl & flat paddle, turn the machine on speed one, if the paddle is tinging on the bowl then we now need to set the head height. Turn the motor off. Raise the motor up and from the front of the machine look in by where the motor hinges on the pedestal. You can see one screw head there. If it's tinging the bowl then you need to turn the screw anti clockwise enough so that the paddle no longer tings on the bowl. Once it's stopped tinging put it onto max speed and make sure it still clears at high speed, if not turn the screw until it stops tinging. That's it.

The dough hook on my KitchenAid Classic no longer fits on the shaft.

Get a round file and gently rasp it out, you are trying to remove the build up in the hole not rasp the metal away. Flour dust gets in the hole and embeds itself into the soft metal of the dough hook. Also clean the shaft if you can see any dark patches on it. The shaft is good quality steel so you can use fine sandpaper on it without really removing any metal. It's not uncommon for a paddle or a hook to become frozen onto the shaft from flour dust getting in there while mixing. The first time I encountered it I had trouble convincing myself the flour was the problem, I've seen enough of them now to know that's what it is.

Kitchenaid artisan mixer does not turn the blade at low speeds

If it is the worm gear then the planetary will stop turning when there is a load on the paddle but the motor will continue to run at the speed you set it at. I'd be checking the carbon brushes, checking that the field assembly has not loosened up a bit and then I would see if the speed control plate adjustment screws are loose. I'd then reset the speed and see if it stays as it should be.

KitchenAid mixer ring falls off

The trim ring news to be ta]ed in place with a plastic-face mallet. This type of mallet does not (if used properly) Mar the surface it striks. Hold the trim ring in place while tapping it in place. It often takes patience to get it right. The ring is properly in place when there is no place where you can insert a fingernail between it and the mixer body all around the ring.

The latch/switch on the speed control board is stuck

You need to take the back cover off and then split the gear cases to find the mechanical reason why the lever is stuck. Take the motor off the pedestal, remove the planetary and undo the 9 screws that hold the bottom gearcase to the top housing. You will need to unplug the white and the black wires from one side of the speed control plate.

I have a 275W Classic

There are lots of places to be looking, first thing I would look at would be under the rear cover to make sure the two nuts that hold the rear motor bearing housing in place are nipped up. You don't wring the neck on these nuts, if you over tighten them you will deform the rear bearing housing. If you can find someone local who has been doing these mixers for a while they will be able to give it a once over. It's unlikely to be expensive. Best people to ask is Kitchen Aid, they should know who does their warranty work in your area. If you are in new Zealand it will be me.

I just searched the KA parts data base for this model and there is no such part???

There are a few parts that make up the speed control mechanism, the selector can only be the knob and lever. That moves the speed control plate which is the ********* square thing under the back cap that tilts when the lever is operated. There is a governor on the end of the armature under that control plate, that governs the speed by cutting the power through a circuit to maintain an even speed. Above the black control plate is a PCB (phase board I think they call it) that along with the other bits & pieces regulates the power to the control plate.

My daughter was trying to mix a cake and did not lock the bowl in first. Now the mixer will not turn on at all. Is there anything I can do to repair it? Any ideas of what is wrong with it?

Not locking the bowl will not in itself cause the mixer to not start. Is there more to this story you have left out?

"Clunk" sound from mixer while running, now does not turn on at all.

You could take the brush covers off and pull the brushes out and look down the hole with a torch and see if you can see anything unusual down there. Also back cover off and look at the switch, wires and governor. If nothing is noted then you will be pulling it apart looking and testing until you find the fault. Making a clunk sound followed by death sounds to me like something has engaged with the motor armature and the majority of that is deep inside. Here in NZ those things have a 5 year guarantee, if wherever you are is close to still being in guarantee you should get it to a repair agent for repair without fiddling about.

My mixer simply does not turn on and has an oil leak. How do I troubleshoot and fix?

Check for circuits through cable, switch and field windings. While checking the fields check that your carbon brushes aren't worn out. Remove the chrome drip ring from around the planetary (it just taps off) and clean the oil out. If you are feeling brave you can knock the planetary pin out that connects it to the driving shaft and lever the planetary off. Wipe the excess oil out of there remembering that the gear does need a smear of grease remaining. The oil is the grease in the gearbox breaking down with age, eventually you will need to open the gearbox, remove the old grease & replace it. The oil itself is harmless as the grease is food grade so it's not a petroleum product.

All speeds work but all too fast

the mixing speed was attained by the use of a potentiometer ( variable resistor ) that would have controlled the power into the board or from the board to the motor it would be under the speed setting knob maybe the resistor in use is not the right one and is not reducing the voltage sufficiently to do the job

The power take off for accessories doesn't work

That's a bit of a task to sort out. If you aren't up for a full strip down and clean up followed by new gears and repack with grease then contact Kitchen Aid for a local repairer. You will be up for a couple of gears and maybe even the top housing if the bush for the accessory drive gear is wrecked. If you need "how to" help then get back to me for step by step.

Get the bowl to release from the stand

The only way to unstick it is with more energy. Get someone to hold the motor unit firmly and someone else turn the bowl anti clockwise. There is no magic if it's stuck, just more effort required.
