just locate the failed part and order it.
In your case either the planetary gear or the worm screw have failed. To find out which pull on the shaft of the beater - if the beater turns when the shaft is rotated the planetary gear is fine and the fault is in the worm screw.

I understand that you are having a problem with your Kitchen Aid 5 Quart mixer. It sounds like you have stripped the gears or the worm gear out. Although, it may not be an expensive parts repair it is not an easy task to complete if you are not mechanical enclined. There are many different little gears in these units.

My suggestion would be to take it a local appliance repair shop that works on mixers. If you can tell me the city that you live in I would be more than happy to give you the location of one or two repair shops. As the unit is so old you want to invest in a new unit and keep that one as a reminder of how long Kitchen Aid has been around.

You will need to open it up and inspect the brushes carefully. Look for a little copper wire, this wire needs to be firmly attached to both the brush and the little disc at the other end of the spring. Clean the brush out with a can of electric cleaner to free any dirt that has built up around the gears.

Hi G_MERRY, it sounds like you’re well on your way, great! You’ve got the correct Parts List Manual from KA, 5KSM150PSEWH4.pdf (777.26 KB), and you’ve started to disassemble your mixer using the exploded view on pages 4 and 5 entitled “Case, Gearing And Planetary Unit”.
The first two screws (Illus. No. 25) you removed from the back only secure the trim strap and the trim strap is only for decoration. To get further ‘under the hood’, you will also need to remove the screw at the top of the End Cover (Illus. No. 24) as well as four larger screws (Illus. No. 30) on the bottom of the mixer head before you can separate the Gear Case Motor Housing (Illus. No. 1) from the Lower Gear Case (Illus. No. 18). You will need to remove the planetary ring (Illus. No. 35) to access the planetary ring and agitator shaft, too, if you are completely re-greasing your mixer, as that seems to be your intent.
To continue to disassemble your mixer you will need a regular and Phillips screwdriver, snap-ring pliers, a small drift pin punch and a small hammer. By using the exploded views in the Part List manual, you should be able to disassemble, inspect, identify and replace broken/worn parts, and reassemble your mixer. The Parts list manual doesn’t provide that step by step assembly instructions that would be nice, but just a general idea of how all the parts fit together.

Hi AUER24, you can easily download both the Parts List manual for your K5SS mixer online from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this model range), and then select this file: KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4). Check to verify they match your mixer model. You can save them to your PC hard drive, and then you can print a hard copy if you wish, or just refer to it when you need to use it.
This particular manual provides both domestic US and International Part numbers, which you will want to use, based upon your 220 volts rating that tells me you have an international model.
For future reference, here are five potential USA vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com (for grease). You should search for ‘food grade grease’ online (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used too – your call). Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do some comparison shopping.

short answer NO! This light is from the brushes on the motor. It needs a service or at best a replacement.

These are held on with a bayonet attachement. You need to rotate the beater to disengage from the shaft.

I would recommmend using a brass pin punch against the tang on the beater and tapping it with a SMALL hammer to rotate the beater.

Once the bayonet is disengaged, it should walk off the pin. If it doesn't you might have to use some penetrating oil like PB Blaster.

IN THE FUTURE put a light coat of mineral oil or food-safe grease on these mating parts to avoid the probllem in the future.

This mixer has a control board on the back that has 2 contacts points, if it is out of adjustment, the machine will not run. You need to adjust the 2 screws at the top (where the springs are) to make the contacts connect. That should solve your problem.

You can find and purchase repair transmission parts from a number of resources on the Internet.

The tech gave you good advice because by the time you pay him to make the repairs, you could have bought a new mixer.

If your mechanically handy, then you can disassemble the mixer and find the failed parts in the transmission. Pay particular attention to the casing to make sure nothing is broken there.
Clean everything up real good to make certain there are no metal fragments that can work their way back into the newly rebuilt transmission. Be sure and order some grease with the new parts as you do not want to reuse the old grease (could be full of metal fragments.).

I've had to rebuild mine a couple of times. It fairly easy if you are mechanically inclined.

It sounds like you may have an issue with your main board. If this is faulty you can have irratic behaviour or none what so ever. You can visually inspect this by first removing the power. Then Remove the rear access panel. After this is removed you can see the main board. Inspect it for any burned marks or wires. Also you can smell for any burning as this can prove useful. Part number for the board is W10119326. Hope this helps.
