HP Pavilion MD5020N 50" DLP HDTV - Page 2 Questions & Answers
My HP MD5020N 50 in. HDTV DLP TV has a broken color wheel
HP might be able to fix it, but it might cost as much as a new LCD screen of similar size. Maybe find another TV to salvage it from? Not sure if you can use the md5820 color wheel as well, since that's also a 720P set -- the one on the 1080P sets is supposedly different. In most of these sets that are broken, the color wheel is the failing part, and they're getting rarer (and are virtually impossible to acquire anywhere -- HP will simply replace the entire "light engine" -- and probably try to rebuild the old one and give it to someone else). Best of luck.
Heard A loud noise...now no picture...and the blue
Mine did this and the color wheel disintegrated (well, just the blue segment, but it's ruined). Virtually impossible to get replacement parts for less than the cost a brand new LCD TV ;-( Of course, it could be something else, but the color wheel and the fans are the only mechanical parts I know of in the TV (that would make any noise). Could have also been the bulb; you can remove that yourself and take a look at it. Leftmost access cover under the front panel.. Bulbs and lamp assemblies are a bit easier to replace (since there are more replacements around).
What happens when one turns the HP MD5020N on without bulb in
If the lamp cover is not in place, the set will have no power, so you cannot turn it on. If you put the cover in place without the bulb, the set will start to turn on, realize it has no bulb, turn off and flash some LEDs on the front to indicate its extreme displeasure with the situation. If that's all that's wrong with it, get a bulb; it's a great TV, although virtually impossible to repair these days (except the bulb).
Letters appearing on screen
Turn off captions (if not on the TV, on your cable or satellite receiver), because that's what's going on. TV or whatever tunes it are most likely providing bad or corrupted caption data, and that's an attempt to decode it. Turning off captions should eliminate the issue (unless you need captions, in which case you should try to improve the quality of the signal into your TV, which is beyond the scope of this particular question).
Where can I get a colour wheel for a HP MD5020n?
Check on the AVS Forum. Parts for these TVs, especially this one are getting to be exceptionally rare. HP may not even sell one to you, but they might fix it for close to the cost of a new LCD TV (low-end one) in that approximate size range. Best of luck.

Aparently all to well Hp knows the difficulities your having with there TV spinoff line, IMHO they should have not even stepped into the TV industry as they got there head chopped off doing so, Dell was another major contender to this fact with there debunked LCD/plasma tv's that got the shield trown at them.
I wish you the best of luck you might want to try ebay.com as a source as well. sorry if this cuased any inconvience but due to the nature of the subject line and the brand I would not even take it in for repair myself.

My tv us fkashing blue light 3xs then resets no
I suspect that in this case your power board has a fault and will need technical intervention. NOT A DIY
But first try this, its a hard reset.
Turn unit off, unplug and leave overnight. Then re plug and turn on, if problem persists its a trip to the service shop.
