Sounds like it needs you to run a "head alignment". That should be available in the printer maintenance screens.

If you're speaking of the docked Printer monitor icon in the quick launch, you can open the task manager and force close the Brother Printer Monitor. All that does is monitor the current status of the device at all times and isn't needed on the task bar.
