Try to print a test page, if this comes out in black in yellow take out the cartridges and make sure the plastic is taken off the bottom and pop them back in. Do a test page again. Does it now print in colour and are there any errors on the machine or pc? i.e. out of ink?

click on control panel and then change the mode of the printer

download the brother network deployment wizard. Run it and
make and executable. run that exe on your laptop. It should do all
the necessary config for you

Error 36 indicates either a mechanical problem (head carriage assembly) or loose part. Most often caused by ripped paper or a paper jam which results in a moved/smudged sensor. Could also be a foreign object, such as a paper clip, in the printer.

Disconnect all cables. Look for loose or bits of paper under the paper tray and behind the rear door. Turn the printer upside down and shake gently but firmly to remove foreign objects.

Then, check the belt and the encoder strip (thin plastic strip) to be certain the strip is properly in the carriage assembly.

If still a problem, that could indicate a mechanical problem. The printer would probably need to be serviced.

Usually printer drivers are updated all the time, and when you buy a printer ( or other devices) one of the first things they do is seek the updates to the drivers.
Also, vista 32 bit or 64 bit is presenting more problems than the designers cold have anticipated.
So, the first thing I would suggest is to check for a proper driver for your OS.
I would also check to see if there are any firewall issues with protection suite software.
Sharing of resources is becoming common place, how many devices are on your USB.
Shooting from the hip here...
It appears that your system is hanging (freezing, not crashing) so I am trying to direct your attention to things that use system
resources heavily.

To scan legal documents you need to set the scanner to legal. GO to Start menu / all programs / brother / scanner utility and set the size to legal.

You need to set Windows Firewall or any other firewall to allow incoming connections from the printer.
In the Firewall Settings, add the port 54925 (the port the scanner uses), in the IP field, the printer's IP address and set the external and internal port number to 54925.

On the printer you can only change the print quality with the quality button, good better or best, or the contrast settings with that button, all others like DPI for resolution have to be selected from your scan software on the computer.
