if you know how to get in to programming, That is programmable feature, You can change that to 10, 20, 30 minutes, I think yours is 30 minutes. This is the link for the owners manual, http://www.caralarm.com/manuals/MARS/MARS-10&11.pdf

Needs a battery in the remote.

Your truck most likely has a chip in the key. You will need to contact the maker of the remote start kit you have and see if they make a kit to bypass the chip key.

might be a bad groun in the engine compartment

It sounds to me like your system is currenty programmed with the Anti-Carjacking feature turned ON. If by chance it's an Omega/Mars system see page 11 feature #7See page 12, how to program these features. See page 15 for more info on the Carjacking feature.
