Sounds like the main jet in the carb is clogged. It will operate on the choke circuit but not on the main circuit. The main jet needs to be cleaned.
I have a Poulan 450
Remove spark plug,it may be fouled and have gas on it,clean it and then reinstall and try if that doesn't work, try a new one. Also check the air filter, may need cleaned or replaced.

Bill,
Check your fuel filter. It may need to be replaced. It is usually in the fuel line before the carbuerator. It is also sometimes in the outlet of the fuel tank. either way, it is easy to replace.
The poulan mower HD4QN20RE does not want to saty
Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all fuel and air passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor a few times, and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, You will first seat the jet screws and count the number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns they were in/out.

Thanks
Good Luck,
I hope this helped
I prime it; and it starts right up. Then, it
Check your gas can. If you put dirty fuel in it, it will block the jets in the carburetor, preventing the engine from getting enough fuel. If you have a dirty gas can, you now will need to clean the carburetor jet.
Amount of oil to fill up after change
Push mowers typically need 20 oz. of oil to fill up. Most should be able to use 10W-30 or 30W, either one are called for in the manuals. If you have the manual there will be a little chart that tells you what grade of oil for a temperature range and normal summer mowing both are correct.
Does the poulan p4tn20sa take
I cannot find any literature on your mower, but I'm guessing it has a 4 stroke Brigg's engine on it. If so, then there is no gas/oil mix requirement. The only engine's where you mix gas and oil are 2 stroke engines, which are not installed on most of today's mowers. There should be a separate place on your mower to put gas and oil in. If so, then you should probably run straight 30 weight oil in it and do not overfill it or you'll ruin your engine. I hope this helps. James.
Hello: I own a poulan,500 series pushmower. The
Always use HD in any engine, especially small ones. Most regular SAE 30 is HD anyway, but nowadays, some is not with recycling and all. May I recommend synthetic? It will clean the engine, lubricate better, allow the engine to run cooler and possibly guarantee no mechanical breakdowns of the engine due to it's superior lubricating quality. Advance Auto Parts has their house brand oil now available in synthetic. . IF using synthetic you can use a muti-viscosity oil, like SAE10-30, but NOT when using conventional oil. If you are steadfast on using conventional oil, always use HD and use SAE30, not multi-viscosity oil.
I can't start it
If the recoil assembly has three screws holding it in place, remove them, lift the recoil assembly off and see if it works off the mower. If it does, reassemble.

When mower is running engine speeds up and slows
Hi kurt simmond..
Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your carburetor jets or fuel passages.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris in yoiur tank then you will need to clean your tank.
Also check you fuel line condition after a while they will degrade and need replacment.
Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:
Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug.
You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and pulling the crank rope, if you are getting spark then:
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank of weedeaters.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor rebuilt that should solve your problem.
