Most likely you have the wrong switch. You ncan't go to Home depot or Lowes and buy a generic switch off the rack and expect it to work (no matter what they tell you)Call Hunter & order switch #6378401000. 1-888-830-1326
http://www.hunterfan.com/uploadedFiles/HunterFan/Support/Support_Documents/98000-01-357.pdf The only place I could really find parts was at this Hunterfan site. There is a phone number on there. If the pull chain is pulled from the switch you may need the switch assembly but if is just the chain you can find those at any hardware store.
Both from measures you describe which are correct and also the smell of overheated and also the replacing of the capacitor indicate a motor winding burn. This is normal only of an age of 3-4 and more, long time of continuasly working and high ambient temperatures.
If all the above are correct then you can sound normal. Some place they rewind motor for you fan but we don't advice it. We beleive a fan replacement is a wise idea but remeber that all manufactures recoment not use the high speed for long periods and especialy on very high ambient temperatures
There is a switch somewhere that controls this. It might be the pull string or it might be on the fan itself. You must find it. If you know where it is and if, after you manipulate it, there is no change, perhaps the switch is bad.
Can you check these things and let me know what you discover?
change speed selection switch . its faulty and has to be replace. do not attempt to open no servacable parts. check at the company or flee market for part it's a standard part.
A fan that old has a muilti speed capacitor. It could be that or the swicth. First thing to do is test the swicth with a voltage tester to see if power is switched to different posts if it does switch it is prob. the cap. Good luck trying to find one.
Turn off circuit breaker to fan. Remove bottom cover plate. Remove thumb nut holding switch in place. Examine switch. Places where wires push in should be numbered. Write down number and coresponding wire color. Remove wires from switch. Take switch with you. Walmart carries some switches but if you can't find it there go to a Locke supply store. Know how many speeds the fan iswhen you go looking. Reassamble in reverse order.
Motors work with magnets. These may be permanent, or more commonly elecromagnets. These are the rotor, and the field magnets. Another type of motor just uses a field magnet and iduces flux in the rotor.
Either way, it sounds like one of the main coil windings has either burnt out or mechanically broken.
If you want to remove it and test the coils with a meter (check resistance of each) this should show the fault.

This must be a common problem, since I Googled the part number and it popped up before I completed the number. I am going to have to order a new remote, since I don't have a solder pen. Wish me luck.
