Just had the same thing. Instructions in the manual didn't work, but found this by trial and error:
- press and hold START/STOP as stated in manual until display goes blank
- with display still blank, press TIMER
- machine pops into life and you can now change the settings.

Worked for me anyway.

If you increase the liquid slightly, that may help. Personally I like a dark crispy crust.

Could be you are not waiting long enough, sometimes it can take several minutes, especially in a rest period. If you have the manual, it usually tells you what each stage of the breadmaking process is and how long the function takes.

It's usually on a label on the side or bottom of the device.

You should see the Maker's name, the part number (PN or P/N) and then the serial number (SN or S/N or just Serial)

Usually this happens when the mixture is too dry. Flour contains varying amounts of moisture, thus water needed also changes. Follow User Manual to help solve the problem or add additional water one tablespoon at a time. The dough should be a little more tacky than conventional bread dough. This will allow the dough to flow out more evenly and be less dense. This is a very important step that many persons miss.
