Excel - Drop Down List

Excel - Drop Down List

Ever wish that you didn't have to type out the same thing over and over again? Well you can save time by using Excel's drop down list!

Drop Down Preparation

Imagine that we are creating an Excel spreadsheet to document our purchases from the grocery store. For each purchase we want to mark down the name of the food and the type of the food.
The way a drop down list works in Excel is that it takes values from some place on your spreadsheet and uses them to populate the options in the list. Lucky for us, the type of food is a perfect opportunity to use a drop down list!
In cells A1 through A7 enter the type of food that will be used for the drop down list.

Creating a Drop Down List

Now that we have a source for our drop down list, we can create a begin to create our drop down.
1. Select cells D2 though D20 (We will be creating a drown down list for each cell in this range)

2. Click the Data menu and select Validation
3. Choose List from the Allow drop down menu

4. Click the Source button that appears to the right of the textfield

5. Select our source cells A1 though A7

6. Press Enter and Click OK

Testing Your Drop Down

All of your cells in the Type column should now have a drop down list. To test to see if your drop down works, click on cell D2 and then click on the downward facing arrow and see if all the types of food are available.

HOW TO COUNT THE OCCURRENCES OF A TEXT STRING

In the cell that you want the result to appear in, enter the appropriate formula from the following examples.
How to Count the Occurrences of a Number
Use this formula
=SUM(IF(range=number,1,0))
where range is the range that you want to search, and number is the number that you want to count.
NOTE: This formula must be entered as an array formula. To enter an array formula, press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
How to Count the Occurrences of a Text String
Method 1
Use this formula
=SUM(IF(range="text",1,0))
where range is the range that you want to search, and text is the text that you want to find (the text must be enclosed in quotation marks).
NOTE: The above formula must be entered as an array formula. To enter an array formula, press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
Method 2
Use the COUNTIF() function to count the occurrences of a text string. For example, use the formula
=COUNTIF(range,"text")
where range is the range of cells that you are evaluating, and text is the text string that you want to count instances of (note that text must be enclosed in quotation marks).
NOTE: This formula must be entered as an array formula. To enter an array formula, press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
Wildcard characters can be used within the COUNTIF function.
The asterisk character (*) represents more than one character. For example, to count all the cells in the range a1:a10 that contain an "x," you can use the following formula:
=COUNTIF(a1:a10,"*x*")
The question mark character (?) can also be used to represent one wildcard character -- for example, to count all cells in the range whose second character is the letter, such as "ax" or "bx."
=COUNTIF(a1:a10,"?x*")

Excel and Word are two parts of the Microsoft Office Suite that have become standards tools for spreadsheets and word processing.
Among their features are the ability to easily exchange information.
For example, you can easily copy a cell or part of a spreadsheet from an Excel and paste it into a Word document, which preserves all the formatting.
This method requires opening up both programs at the same time.
To avoid this, you can insert an Excel file from within Word itself.

Choose the "Insert" tab inside Microsoft Word to display the Object dialog box.
Click the "Create from File" tab and Browse to display the Browse dialog box.
Navigate to the Excel file that you need and double-click to load its name into the File Name box of the Object dialog box.

Click a checkmark into the "Link to File" box if you want the table that you insert to be automatically updated anytime the original file is changed.
Otherwise, leave it blank if you don't want the inserted information to be affected by the original file.

Click "OK" to insert the Excel file as a frame into the document.
Note how only filled cells from the first table (worksheet) of the file are inserted.
Blank cells are not inserted. You can resize the frame by clicking it and dragging the handles that appear.
You can also click it and drag it to a different line within the document.

option: formula is
formula: =(datecell="")
select formatting of choice

Highlight the order cells, go to >format>conditional formatting, choose "formula is" instead of "cell is". When you refer to the datecell, use the first date cell in the column only, and do not use $ signs.

Open Windows File Explorer and use the search box for the name of the folder. When found click on it and Outlook will open and re-register it.

If it can't be found, but you found the standard folders, Inbox, Drafts and Sent plus Deleted, then the folder has been accidentally Deleted. You need to use Undelete Software. That will bring it back as long as that sector of the hard drive hasn't been overwritten with new data.
