The drum baffle screw has unscrewed itself and the head is thumping against the inside top panel. Pull door, lift lid, rotate drum to find screw sticking out and tighten.

Before you tear your dryer apart first check the cord connection and the outlet. Many times the problem is there, ( WITH THE DRYER UNPLUGGED) After that, You will need a few tools to get into it. You will need a putty knife to press in on the clips the hold the top down, located in the gap between the top and the front, one on each side of the door, this is the part of the top that has the slant. Then you remove the screws one each side, commonly 5/16th or 1/4 (yellow or red but driver). Then you can tip the front forward. You will find the next frame below the holds the drum in place. You can do some testing with out removing it. Check the element first, it usually shorts out against the case. Sometimes, it will give you a false reading always best to remove it and inspect it. For that you will remove the frame holding the drum after you release the belt from the motor pulley and idler pulley. Make sure you understand how it is routed around the pulleys or you are going to have a problem on your hands when installing later. You buy no parts You diagnose the problem to find something wrong How about looking in the owners manual & follow the trouble chart I do not know about Maytag Dryers, but the washers have a diagnostic manual in a bag under the cabinet, they don't want you to find,your dryer may also.

It sounds like the switch is getting bad, contacts in the switch no doubt have burned spots and it is hard to get a connection through burned spots. So I would say replacing the switch is in order.

it sounds like the control board is going bad but i wouldn't buy any parts for this dryer,soon you won't be able to get parts for it,put the money into a new dryer not to mention that the neptune products is what took maytag out and now whirlpool owns maytag.you could also have a problem with one of the connections or a bad wire in one of the connections and when you move the wires it's working again and this could be from the heat,after years the wires get brittle,you could buy the new board,put it in and if it's a wire you're back to square one,but from what you say it's either a wire in one of the connections or the board.good luck with your dryer.
