it does have an internal battery, but that normally wont prevent it
from turning on unless the battery is defective.

plug it in to the usb cable on your computer for a while (normally it will start right up) then slide to power switch to the on position for about ten seconds.

if that fails, press and hold the lower right corner of the screen and then slide the power switch to the on position while holding the lower right corner of the screen and follow the directions once it starts

i can give you something else to try before you go and spend money on a battery...a battery should be the last thing to do, even though it will more often then not fix the problem thats tempory..

if it turns out you think you need a battery, i will point you to one with instructions on how to change it.

The battery CAN be replaced, however it is not an easy swap battery pack.
The battery in all garmin units is soldered directly to the PCB.
Garmin does not have authorized repair centers, and they have a flat-rate repair if your unit is no longer under warranty.

There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your automotive GPS unit.1

1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle. About 3 hrs for a full charge. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.
2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer (like a full day) than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.

1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F respectively) then it will not charge. When connected to external power it will only be operating off of external power.
2 - The Quest® and Quest® 2 will not charge using a USB cable.

Sounds like the battery isn't being charged. Check the fuse in the plug to ciggarette lighter. Also, make sure you have a live 12v outlet.

Just turn it on.If its working properly and has a clear view of sky it will find you exact loacation.May take several minutes though.

same here, I talked to tech support and they said I will have to send it to their kansas office and they will give me a new one.

I asked Garmin how to display maps when connecting a 265WT to a PC with a USB cable. Based on the following reply I received from Garmin the answer is you can't. Have you ever updated your software in your Garmin 265WT. Perhaps you were able to display a map with the USB cable connected with an earlier version of the software. Whereas the latest version of the software will not let you display a map with a USB cable connected.

is designed to go into mass storage mode when connected to a computer."

I have Garmin nuvi 265T. I dont see the battery icon on the main screen. Also, when i unplug the GPS device, it turns off (as if there is no battery).. Does this means that the battery is dead? The device is less than a year old... pls advice.

The nuvi 265 comes with two cables. The auto cable will power it while you're driving, and charge it if you turn the unit off (slide the switch to the left to turn it off/on, or to the right to lock it in the off position). You can see the level of charge on the main page (especially when it's unplugged).

The other cable connects the nuvi to a USB port on your computer. In this mode, the nuvi will appear as a storage device, so you can download images and updated software/maps to it. It will also draw a charge from the USB cable.

either bring it to the location where you programmed the code or send it back to garmin. this is an anti-theft feature.

usually POI comes with the map, you should update the map version in order to get newer POI.

The indicator goes away telling you that its no longer running on battery power and that its running on the car or AC charger. During that time, its charging the battery. Only when you remove the unit from the charger/adapter will you see the battery icon because you will then be on battery power. 4 green bars mean you are near or fully charged.

using your touch screen, go to tools> my data> set home location> you can use your current position or you can enter it. then it will be save as a home address

if your device is equipped with an FM transmitter feature, you should disable it in order to enable the device external speaker. and to check that go to volume>FM trans>diable
