Do i need to update
No need. You just have to make sure that your 2 network adapters are installed correctly like the one for LAN and the integrated wireless adapter.

My son has gotten spyware
Well try booting into safe mode and running your antivirus scan. To boot in safe mode, you have to tap on a hotkey when you boot the pc up. it may be ...either F2, F8, Esc or something like that. Booting to safe mode will only boot the bare minimal services for the machine to run. Once you've booted into safe mode, run the antivirus complete scan. Quarantine everything it finds and delete it. Next, download Anti-Malwarebytes (on a clean machine) from

How to install base system
Go to the emachine driver support page
here.
Go to Notebooks, D-Series, D620, choose your operating system, then by process of elimination figure out which driver you're missing, or you could just download them all ;)

Do i need a dist
Hi,
If by factory reset you mean restore everything including the operating system then yes, you need the restore disks that came with it.
Otherwise you will need to do this manually with your own copy of operating system and then locate all the drivers. The easiest way for novices to get this done is to ask a technician to do it for them but obviously that carries a cost although it should work out cheaper than you purchasing Microsoft Windows (if you're going with windows) as proper technicians will have access to refurbishment pricing with Microsoft. For example you can pay up to £180 for windows 7, whereas we usually charge £90 for a rebuild service - so you can see it works out cheaper with us, but you need to look at your options where you are and what technicians are available to you and what they charge.

Hi cheri92005.
Let me explain you the trick to remove the Windows Login password without deleting any Data in the Hard Drive.
You may reset the Windows Login password by using the "Ophcrack" Software.
Let me also explain you about this Software:
1) This Application is used to reset or crack all the Windows Login passwords without deleting any personal Data.
2) This Applications removes all the password for the Users using the Computer.
You may download the Application from the below link:
http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php?type=livecd
1) Open the link and download the Application.
2) The Application must be in the .ISO format. Hence, you need to mount to file using any Mounting Software(such as Power ISOI, Magic ISO, Alchohol etc.,)
3) Then, burn the mounted image to any CD or DVD.
4) Once this is done, please use the Disc with the Computer in which you need to reset the Windows password.
5) As there a lots of steps involved, I have mentioned the article which has the detailed information to use the Ophcrack Application to reset Windows login passwords.
Article:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/ophcracksbs.htm
Please follow the steps mentioned above and in the article.
Performing the above steps should remove the Windows Login password.
Hope this helps.
Please feel free to as further questions.

D620 will power up. The lights come on, I can hear
Start taking your laptop apart piece by piece and test it after each removed component:
1. Remove the hard drive and test the laptop.
2. Remove the DVD drive and test the laptop.
3. Remove the wireless card and test the laptop.
4. Unplug the display panel from the motherboard/video card and test the laptop.
etc....
Continue taking it apart until you have only three major components connected: motherboard (with video card), processor, and memory. If you still experience the same problem, most likely it's bad motherboard.
By the way, before you start, try reconnecting the memory module. If you have two modules installed, try removing them one by one and test the laptop with each one separately.
