I am reliably informed if the cola was sweetened with sugar only a strip-down and manual cleaning has a chance of working.

If sugar-free an aerosol of plastic friendly contact cleaner might work.

If you want to know if these spots are on the sensor. Or you want to exclude this, You could try this:
Put the camera in A priority. (manual mode). Turn the aperture to the highest setting. Greatest figure like f 22 I can't find the exact figure. It could be it is only 8. Then in a bright light, take a picture of a white sheet of paper. The picture that comes out, should be checked on dark spots. If they are there the spots are on the sensor. If you can't find the spots on the white picture, something else is wrong.

I can't find this message in the manual. Power failures are the most common errors with portable gear. You have to rely on the quality of the batteries. Each and every battery can become faulty, with no obvious reason you can think off. Using lots of rechargeable batteries myself, I think I know where I'm talking off. Please to be sure, take another set of batteries, charge them and put them in the camera. Try to avoid alkaline batteries, because they only are capable of doing half the job of an rechargeable NiMH, pro charge. Also never use NiCD rechargeable batteries, because they won't have the correct voltage. (perhaps one or two shots, but the voltage drops very quick to 1,2 volt, its working voltage).
You also can check the camera and the batteries, if they don't have dirty or oxidised contacts. Only clean contacts with a dry cloth. Or when really dirty, with just a little contact oil on a cloth to wipe the contacts. Be sure you dry the contacts after the cleaning. Never use sharp tools to clean electronic contacts.
