How do I remove a tumbnail from a photo?

Once you've added you're photos, you can set a different photo to act as thumbnail (the programme automatically chooses the first photo/slide, indicated by a little green ticked box sign).
To change the thumbnail to a different photo, highlight the photo you want as thumbnail by clicking it - the frame will change to yellow - and then click on the green ticked box command ("Set Thumbnail") at the top of the window.
You cannot alltogether delete the thumbnail, because every slide show you create needs to have a thumbnail to link the slide show to the menu screen at the start of your DVD. So, on your menu screen there will always be at least one thumbnail. (The black thumbnail that appears in the middle of your screen when you first open the programme, is a "place holder". It needs to be there and it cannot be deleted. Once you've created a slide show, it will be replaced with the photo you have chosen to be the thumbnail. Every time you create a new slide show, a new thumbnail will be added to your menu screen. The position of thumbnails can be changed, using the second ("Edit") Tab.

You will find a User's Guide on the install disc. It can be accessed by inserting the install disc and clicking on the relevant link, or you can right click on your CD/DVD drive (in "My Computer") and then click on "Explore" to look for it on the install disc - it's a pdf file.

I can not save my pictures?

Dear DarleneTo save your photos, you should already have done the following:You clicked on "Create New Slide Show". A new window appeared - it is called "Slide Show Creator - Select Photos". You clicked on "Add Photos". You looked for your photos on your computer, selected them and then clicked on "Open" to add them to the slide show. (I'm leaving out the parts on transition, soundtrack and duration, since they do not relate directly to your question.)Now, click on the "Next" button at the bottom of this window. You are now at the window called "Slide Show Creator - Options". At the section called "Name Slide Show" type a name for the show. To save the photos: 1) click on the "Finish" button at the bottom of the window. The window disappears and you are now back at the Menu window (where you started). 2) Click on the word "File" at the top left of the window. Go to "Save Project" and click on it. A window called "Save As" appears. Type in the name you want to give to the project and click on "Save" at the bottom right. You have now saved the project (including photos) on the computer - it should be in your "My Documents" folder. If you go and have a look in your "My Documents" folder, you will notice a file (or files) with a ".slw" extension. These kind of files contain information about the slide shows you've created. They form the individual parts - or chapters - of your project. They are only used by the SlideShow Expressions programme. You will also notice another kind of file, one that ends with a ".ssp" extension. It should contain the name of your project, because that's what they are: project files. It contains all the information that is needed for the programme to burn or view your project: the chapters, the photos, the soundtrack, etc. This is the file you will load when you've just opened SlideShow Expressions and want to continue making or editing your existing project(s). If both these kinds of files are there, "slw" and "pps", it is a good sign and means that your project (and therefore the photos contained in them) has probably been saved correctly.I hope I understood your question correctly. If you have a legitimate copy of the programme, there will be a User's Guide on the install disc. It is good to consult this when you have questions. Simply insert the install disc and once it activates a window on your screen, click on the relevant link (something like "User's Guide") to access the guide. You can also copy the User's Guide from the disc to your computer. This will be usefull if you're going to use the guide a lot. To copy it, insert the install disc and then go to "My Computer". Right-click on your ROM/Writer drive (it may display the name of the programme), and click on "Explore" to look for the User's Guide on the disc. It is a pdf file. You can copy it and then paste it somewhere on your computer for quick access. If you still have questions, you may make use of the free online support: go to www.individualsoftware.com/support.The best of luck to you. From: Hendrik Uys

How do you add the music to the slide show?

Dear annettesamtoFirst do the photos. When you have finished that, click on the "Next" button at the bottom of the window. Now look for your music files by clicking on the "Select Audio Files" button in the "Soundtrack" section. For example, go to "My Documents" and then select the "My Music" folder and click on "Open". Select the music file you want and once again click on "Open". The track you have chosen should now appear in the white area in the "Soundtrack" section. Repeat this to choose more music tracks until you are satisfied with your selection. To delete any tracks from the list, select it in the "Soundtrack" section and then click on the little dustbin to the right and just above the white area where the names of the music tracks are.Hint: Try to get the combined length of all your music tracks ("Total audio time") close to the "Duration of Slide Show". Then decide how long (in seconds) you want every photo to be displayed before the slide show moves on to the next photo. All your photos will be displayed for the same amount of seconds. In the "Duration" section, at "Set Duration", type in the amount of seconds you would roughly want your photos to be displayed for (for example 8 seconds). If the "Duration of Slide Show" and "Total audio time" is the same or very close, you can ignore the part where it says "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack". However, if the difference is several seconds or more, click on "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack". This will ensure that your slide show (photos) ends when the music ends. It means that your photos may now be displayed for slightly less or more seconds than the amount you indicated, but at least the soundtrack and the photos will end together. When you are satisfied with your soundtrack, click on "Finish" at the bottom of the window. If the computer asks you if you want to replace an existing file, click on "Yes". The soundtrack window dissapears. Now click on "File" at the top left of the window and choose "Save Project".You can listen to your soundtrack by clicking on tab 3 ("Produce") and then on the "Enter" button on the remote control. You should be aware that some music files may not work with SlideShow Expressions, particularly some files that have been downloaded from the internet, for example through iTunes. This has to do with copy-protection and causes some tracks not to play properly. As a rule, though, mp3 files should work fine, as well as tracks ripped from CDs, like wma files. The User Guide gives a list of all the supported music files. The User Guide is on the install disc. To find it, insert your install disc and click on the relevant link that appears, or you can go to "My Computer", right-click on the CD/DVD drive and click on "Explore" to look for it on the install disc; it is a pdf file.I hope this was helpful. The best of luck to you.Hendrik Uys

Would like to trim music to fit slides and add

Hello, WrenSlideShow Expressions is a very basic programme: simplicity is the key. It is designed to give instant results. Therefore, the things you can do with the photo's, music, etc. are very limited. No frills, no complicated editing. For example: no fading in or out of music; no cutting a music track down to a certain length, etc. Also, the programme doesn't allow you to have a different time setting for every photo. Whatever duration time you select (say 9 seconds), it goes for each photo. As a result you would typically go about adding your music tracks as follows:After you have added all the photo's that would make up the whole slideshow, make a rough estimate of how long each photo should be displayed on the screen. Type this number in the open slot (for seconds). You can now get an idea of how long the entire slideshow will be: the duration will be showed at the bottom. Now, choose tracks that, together, will just about (more or less) account for the whole length of the slideshow. When you've added them one by one, click on the option to fit the slideshow to the soundtrack. Obviously this could change the amount of seconds that each photo will be displayed. That's about it. Play around with tracks of different lenghts and see what the time duration would be if you were to fit the slideshow to this altered track length.Be careful about the music you use. This programme (as would many others) may develop problems when using downloaded music, because this music is usually protected in some way (for example, tracks downloeded from iTunes are known to cause problems: they may not play or sound bad). Also, it is always good to read the User Guide. If you have a legitimate copy of the programme, the User Guide will be included on the install disc in pdf format. You can look for it by exploring the install disc or by simply clicking on the relevant link after you've inserted the install disc.I hope this was helpful. Best of luck to you. From: 11407336.

When trying to burn dvd there is no option to

Yes, this problem has allready been mentioned a few times on this forum. The programme is supposed to give you two different options when you click on the little dropdown menu button - the second option should be the name of your writer drive.
I have only encountered this problem once. It was quickly solved by exiting and then restarting the programme (maybe reboot as well), but it seems that not everyone is that lucky. Unfortunately, nobody has ever given any additional feedback on this, though.

I recommend that you get in touch with the technical support team at Individual Software. They have helped me successfully before. The service is FREE. Their policy is to contact you within 48 hours of approaching them.
Go to http://www.individualsoftware.com/support/. If you haven't yet registered the product with them, you need to do that at this site before they can help you - in that case, click on "Online Product Registration Form" to do so. When you're registered, complete the form called "Contact Technical Support". It doesn't really take all that long to do. You will be asked to give your computer details, like brand, RAM, operating system, etc., so maybe get all the info that you can before you go to the site. You can correspond via e-mail or phone; I only gave my e-mail adress. This way they can ask questions and you respond and vice versa. It really is worth trying out.
I wish I could be of more help.

In the transition box all

Dear ghayes4437

I'm not sure that I understand your problem, so please forgive me if my response sounds odd. Not all wipes end in the lower right corner of the transition box. Also, there are 4 different categories of wipes (of which 3 are closer to the end of the list). Or do you mean that when a photo is displayed on the monitor, the wipes are only visible in the lower right hand corner of all your photos? (which would be extremely weird indeed).

I'm not aware that one can actually fade out the soundtrack. The manual doesn't appear to say anything about that. I always pick music tracks that will together fit (or nearly fit) the duration of my slide show and then click the option to fit the slide show to the soundtrack.

There could be a number of reasons why you're having trouble adding music files to your slide shows. First I'll lay out the procedure and afterwards I'll give some hints / a link to individualsoftware.com where problems with audio files are discussed.

The procedure (adding music files using SlideShow Expressions):
The programme opens and you are automatically in tab 1: "Add Media".
Click on "Create New Slide Show". Click on "Add Photos"; tell the programme where the photos are, select them, insert them, change their positions if necessary.
Now:
1. Click on "Next" at the bottom of the screen.
2. At "Soundtrack", click "Select Audio Files", then tell the programme where the music files are located on your computer, click to highlight a specific music file, click on "Open". The music file you selected now appears in the Soundtrack window. Repeat this until all the music files you want appear in the Soundtrack window. (You can delete any of them by clicking to highlight any specific file and then click on the little rubbish can icon.) As you go along, the total audio time for the slide show / chapter is displayed as well as the "Duration of Slide Show".
3. In the "Duration" section, you have the option to set the length of time you want per slide (seconds) - usually 8 to 10 seconds is best. (All your slides will follow this instruction; you can't set the duration of individual slides to a different time.) At "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack", you alter the duration of the slides to fit the length of the soundtrack. (This cancels out the previous seconds-per slide setting.) You must therefore choose music tracks that, when added together, will approximately span the whole length of the slide show and then you can fine-tune this by clicking the "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack" option.
4. When you are satisfied with your choice of music tracks and the length of your slide show, click on "Finish".

Issues with music files when using SlideShow Expressions
A.
According to the User Guide (section 3-3) - included on the install disc as a pdf file - the supported audio formats are: mp3, wma, wav, ra. Make sure that your computer also meets all of the requirements (on the box).
B.

Photo & Video Expressions is not compatible with audio files that have been protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) functionality. Most audio files purchased online through Internet music retailers like iTunes, Urge, or Rhapsody are encrypted with some form of DRM. Similarly, audio files that have been extracted from a CD or DVD (the process known as "ripping") using certain media applications (iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.) often have default settings that encrypt the files extracted.

There is no way to used DRM audio files purchased from online music retailers with Photo & Video Expressions. However, if you want to used music and audio files that you have extracted from your CD collection, then all you have to do is change the ripping setting in your media application before you extract the files to your computer. Go to the following site to read about how to change your ripping settings:

http://www.individualsoftware.com/support/frequently_asked_questions.html

Type your question OR (below):

"Photo & Video Creativity": choose "SlideShow Expressions" from drop-down menu, click "Go".

A window appears with options on problems, e.g. "Why aren't my audio files showing?"; "Why won't my music files work?" Click to read. The best of luck to you. From: 11407336. PS. Try individualsoftware.com

Is there a limit to

Best debidell

That doesn't sound right. I've definitely made slide shows of 100 slides and more and burned them successfully too. I usually create projects divided into chapters of about 50 photos each, though, for example, my largest project so far: about 460 photos - 5 chapters of 50 photos each on disc1; 4 chapters of 50 photos each and 1 chapter of about 10 photos on disc 2. However, I have also burned projects that only had one chapter (i.e. one slide show icon on my menu page), for example one with 105 photos.
What you're reporting sounds strange. Do you mean that the slides get deleted during the burning process (that it is only missing from the burned disc), or do you mean that the slides get deleted while you're still compiling the show? However, I recommend the following:
1. If you don't mind breaking your slide show up into smaller parts (chapters), create a show containing about 50 slides, then another with 50, etc. For each slide show you would click on "Create slide show" and each would have its own chapter icon on your menu page. These slide shows will then run continuously, the one following the other. The benefit is that you (or the person the project is meant for) can then more easily access a specific area or slide in your project if so prefered, but also, breaking up your project into smaller parts seem to assist the burning process.
2. Contact the technical support team for SlideShow Expressions at individualsoftware.com. They've helped me out in the past and will get into touch with you within 48 hours of stating your case. You have to register your product with them before you can get help (computer and programme particulars, etc.), but it doesn't take all that long and it really is worth trying out. Don't hesitate - it is a FREE service. They can respond via email or even phone.

I've picked up a few pointers along the way when it comes to SlideShow Expressions:
a) Large photos (1MB and more) can disrupt the burning process - a classic symptom being that the burning process stops during the actual writing of the files (step 5?). I have successfully burned projects containing photos of 1MB and more, but often this is the reason why burning might fail or you end up with a defective end product. Don't be afraid to resize your photos. Yes, it takes up valuable time, but experimenting with photo sizes can save a project. I've been using Microsoft Office Picture Manager to resize my photos to about 400 / 500 KB per photo (or even smaller), but in the end you have to see what works for you. Look, if 1MB or larger works for you, go for it. But there really is no visual difference in the end product: I cannot tell that I'm looking at resized photos and nobody else will either. Of course, I like to add a second disc (CD-ROM) to my projects, containing the original photo sizes so family members can use these for printing, etc.
b) One of the things that make SlideShow Expessions so successful, is the fact that you can make quite lenghty projects. This however, may lead to issues resulting in failure to burn correctly (or even at all) to disc. It helps to divide your project into chapters.
c) The option to also archive your photos and music files on the disc is a great feature, but it has been linked to burning failures, especially when your project is very large / your photos are quite large (a and b).
d) When including video clips in your project, be sure not to use files that are very large. The end product may work well on computer, but it may also cause problems when that same disc is viewed on TV, as some DVD players will not be able to handle large video clips.

I hope all of this can be of help. Do contact individualsoftware.com should this issue persist. I wish you all the best.
