The resolution that the Xbox is pushing out is most likely too much for the TV, and it switches off because it can't physically display the signal. Try hooking the xbox to another TV (if you have one) and setting the resolution to something in the neighborhood of 420p so that you can see the screen. After you do this, take it back to your TV and switch it slowly up in resolution until it blinks out. When it blinks out, you know that the resolution is too much.Change it back to the next lowest resolution and play away.
