Upon turning on computer, screen remains black, power button, volume, speaker, etc. lights up, fan on, but NUMLock/Caplock LED's blink continuously (no pattern). Was able to get screen to appear

that error means BTW, POWER IS TOO LOW. !one guy said what is power?, I said well, "it runs on DC power, from the power pack and bank of regulators in side, and if power is bad, all is hopeless until fixed. " We test that using magic tool called a voltmeter, guessing zero here. we do tests.if that is not clear, have it serviced in a shop.we first clean the PC and get out all that lint that causes overheating.http://www.pcdied.com/overheated.htmlDV7-1232nr " Was able to get screen to appear"? what screen? , keep in mind , we are blind herein a silly text box. post photos of screens?be like the first ever.?We do sequenctial tests to fix PCbooting is serial process, so that is the path to proper diagnosis on all PC.lets see , that now. 6 year old PC, best I can tell1: main battery out! if PC runs now, the battery is bad. end story. buy one or leave it out for ever.2: line pack , make sure 19vdc makes it to the MOBO, as for sure , no power there , NO JOY, ever. ok? use a volt meter, to test power or buy a new AC/DC PACK if guessing is the order of the day.3: BIOS screens are first, forget windows, or what ever OS you run, (unstated by you ,sadly)4: The BIOS screens are F10 or ESC, older is f10the PC prompted you for 6 long years, hit F10? to enter setup, so that be it.Power on and quickly n hammer the F10 key, see BIOS?5: if the bios screens are dead, no text ever.our gold is BIOS. first. then the CCFL H3LL.PC older than 2010 were NON LED screens and wereCCFL tubes (that sux) the fail, the all fail fast.in fact left on in 2years the die. longer if LT unused mostly.your PC has CCLF, they can go dim, blink,go yellowor die or even go INTERMITTANT.one day ok, next not this is the magic world of CCFL, all do that , now or soon ,for sure.see the flash light trick yet. as seen herehttp://www.pcdied.com/monitors.html#flashlighttestLets say the LCD is truely dead not just back lamp dead. what thenI told you its serial process , and is.next is what, well the PC told you power was bad.in fact so bad the LCD data part is dead.the PC can not compute at all.due to low power.we then stip the PC down to its basic parts.from easy to harder in every case.labor, hard. dig. LT sux to work on, a fact,i pull the CD drive (testing boots each time)I pull the HDD drive.pull all memory but one testing each 1 by 1 for hope. deal.my mobo in my laptop has 6 or 7 modules. (i dont pull CPU)keep in mind any thing there seen can short. right?you do know shorting will overload your regulators. a fact of lifeso pull them all, wifi card, modem card, express card, blu-tooth module ,well pull all that can be pulled. after all again, learn that all things inside can short out. beyone here, is mostly main board doom.(mobo)some 2008 PC had solder ball failure, seems im not sure last your your was made, hoping not 2008., PC from H3ll MADE THEN.i can not for he life of me unstand the afraid comment..does that mean the PC runs ok after fiddling ityou never said that. only the fiddling parts.

Where is the mute button on the pavilion dv7

There are several models of Pavilion Dv7 so I am not sure yours is similar to what I mention, but there are Pavilion Dv7 with a line of keys of top of the keyboard, with, on the same line, the computer power button on left, then the mute button, then a volume scroll zone.

    1. Click Start , right-click Computer , and then select Properties .
    2. Click Advanced system settings , grant permission to continue if prompted, and then click the Advanced tab.
    3. Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section of the Advanced tab.

    I have installed a 2nd

With XP and 2000, though, use Windows' Disk Management utility. Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, and choose Disk Management from the tree at left. Your new drive should appear, with a black bar indicating it isn't partitioned. Right-click the bar, and choose New Partition to launch the New Partition wizard. Installed drives and their partition schemes appear in the Disk Management window's lower-right corner.

Click Next, and check that Primary Partition is selected; click Next again, to the Specify Partition Size screen (don't change the partition size in the "Partition size in MB" field); and click Next to advance to another screen, on which "Assign the following drive letter" should be selected. Click Next yet again (to the Format Partition screen), and ensure that "Format this partition with the following settings" is selected and that the "File system" drop-down reads "NTFS." Click Next a final time, hit Finish, and formatting begins.
Formatting could take an hour or more, depending on drive capacity. But don't be surprised if your formatted drive has less capacity than the package claims. A 320GB drive, for instance, formats to about 300GB. Drive manufacturers advertise preformatted size, but a portion of the drive is inaccessible.
    Hope this information will help.

Your response is very much appreciated...Thank you for using Fixya...

Yes it can, but maybe you might need to buy a caddy if required, or a head adapter if required to connect to your extra harddrive port.

    My HP pavillion dv7 keeps

Be sure that the laptop is plugged in to the power supply before you start! Are you restoring from an image in the machine or a CD or DVD disk?

Either way this takes quite a while and most manufactures warn you that the machine will reboot a few times (I have seen some take 5 reboots) to complete the task, so be patient.

The last part of your question concerns me. If you power cycled the computer (turned it off then on) half way through the process it could be hard crashed. If you have the CD or DVD dish this would not be a big problem but if you are restoring from an image this could be bad. Let us know.

Monitor does not light up. Computer has power.

Did you hear a sound beeping. If you can hear a sound beeping it is a RAM problem. But if there is no sound beeping that is a processor problem. Remove the processor and clean make sure that the processor fan is spinning so that it will control the temperature of the CPU to avoid overheating.
