Don't know range of unit
The manufacturer claims a 2-mile range for these radios, but that is just a pipe dream. These are low power line-of sight radios that are described by many as "toys." Effective range under most conditions is not much more than 100 yards.

Bell South 2250 one seems to be voice activated and other not voice activated.
To turn off sound activation press the menu button 3 times to enter VOX mode. The VOX icon should be flashing, then press the down button till the number of bars dissappear. Press the menu button to confirm the VOX off mode. You also can adjust the sensitivity of the VOX mode by how many bars are displayed, less bars equal less sensitivity. No bars and voice command is deactivated. Hope this helps.

Is the two way radio easily fixed, suspect mic, or is it garbage?
If you can do minor soldering, you may be able to fix the radio. They have no parts available, so they are considered "junk" when they break. But if you do the following, you may be able to repair it: open radio, unscrew the housing and pull it apart. Take the circuit board and look for corrosion, it often looks greenish or white. If the radio has a lot, there is water damage. You may still be able to fix it. You've gone this far! Use a Q Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and remove as much corrosion as you can. Let it dry. Take your soldering gun and lightly resolder each spot on the circuit board. Touch the tip, as soon as the solder turns liquid, remove it! I have fixedhundreds of radios and cell phones by doing this. But it may not work. It just takes your labor! Good luck!
