I'm using a Ti-84 plus and when I try simple

You apparently have your calculator set to display no digits to the right of the decimal point. 5/2 is 2.5, which rounds to 3, and 50/100 is 0.5, which rounds to 1. To change the display setting, press MODE, highlight the desired settings on the first two lines, then press ENTER followed by 2ND QUIT. Try setting "NORMAL" and "FLOAT" and see what results you get now.

The screen is black on

Hi,

This could be a contrast issue. Look for blue contrast markers on the up and down arrow keys on the top-right of the device.

1. Press "Alpha" (top left of device below screen)
2. Press the down arrow key on the right towards the top of the device

Repeat these steps until the screen becomes clear again (you must press "Alpha" for each contrast adjustment).

If down doesn't work, try up several times instead.

TI84 Plus won't start

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.
