Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder Questions & Answers
Put dvd in unit and it shut down. now it will not
Unusual, but not uncommon. Sounds like a general failure of the switchmode power supply within your unit. If it will not power up at all, even after unplugging it from the wall socket, for several minutes to a couple of hours, then it is DEFINITELY a SMPS fault
Unless you are technically experienced with electronic circuits, I would recommend that you submit the recorder to an authorised Toshiba service centre (or similar agent for them), get a quote (and a second opinion - this makes things easier to determine over the long term) - the quote will give you a rough idea of the real trouble and repair/parts/labour cost(s) involved to restore your machine to original working condition - plus it will allow you to get the disc which is in it - back into your hands unharmed.
The upshot of this is the workshop quote will also allow you to make a decision as to whether or not to go further with this unit - up to you. If it proves to be too expensive, or liable to cost more than a brand new one to fix, consider replacing the unit - but only as a last resort.

It sounds like the power supply has failed. A good idea would be to check all components in this section, in particular the IC regulators, as well as diodes and capacitors for leakage and/or short circuits. Look for bad solder joints, burnt spots around parts, swollen capacitors etc. The ICs in this series (especially those in the power area) are known to cause trouble, so check those first. Also check resistors (fusible, high wattage (usually white block types) and normal colour-banded types) to see if any are open circuit or have gone high (resistors don't usually short circuit - they either go open circuit or change their value).
To ensure long-term reliability, it is a good idea to replace ALL of the electrolytic capacitors in any power supply as well as any blown/open/short-circuit parts. Capacitors are the most likely culprits for problems, so when replacing them, uprate their working voltages and/or values where necessary. If none of this restores your machine to full operation, take it to a service centre and seek a second opinion on this matter.
How do I hook up
Take the unit in to a place like radio shack and have them find the correct cable you need. Make sure you know what connection you need for the TV. this may require a special plug but I would not expect that, there are a ton of different connection cables for different units.
Connect to the component outputs on the back of the dish receiver. This is the output for TV1. Then conncect the ouput of the dvd dr420 to your TV. I am using the HDMI output on the dr420 to connect to an HDMI port on my tv. This results in a 1080p picture on the TV which is sharper than the 1080i from the dish receiver's HDMI cable. My Sony TV has multipe HDMI ports so I can choose betweeen these 2 inputs and can see the differance since Dish only sends 1080p on it's pay for view channels

hi, have you tried plugging it into another port in the back of telly, and have you also tried selecting the channel its on using the remote, try pressing the button that changes the input on the remote its usually input botton or av or source try pressing the button and see if it changes anything, you may need to press it more than once.
Now another thing that could be causing the problem is if you have got another device switched on such as video or cable or sky box if you have anything else plugged into the telly then try switching this off as sometimes the other device can cause static giving you the noise you are hearing, so try the lead in another port on the telly or make sure everything else is switched off.
let me know how you get on ok, make sure you try the channel on the remote as well as you could be on the wrong input channel.
give it a try and let me know what happens ok

Disc not reading. toshiba dr420 dvd recorder.
Multiple problems with the DVD recorder one of them could be the lasers not reading correctly its software is messed up or there something wrong with this but to me it sounds more like the DVD recorder has a problem I've experienced this problem before not with this particular type of DVD recorder I fix the problem by unplugging the DVD player for about 20 seconds to a minute to give it a good reset.
Quick tip: most high Tech Device problems or unknown errors can be fixed by simple restart or reset hope this helps
Change batteries on my toshiba se-r0001 remote
- Locate the Battery Cover: Look for the battery cover on the back of the remote control. It is usually a small compartment that can be easily opened.
- Remove the Battery Cover: Depending on the design, there may be a latch, screw, or sliding mechanism to secure the battery cover. Use your fingers or a small screwdriver to open the compartment.
- Remove Old Batteries: Take out the old batteries from the battery compartment. Pay attention to the orientation of the batteries, so you know how to insert the new ones correctly.
- Check Battery Polarity: Take note of the positive (+) and negative (-) signs inside the battery compartment. Make sure to insert the new batteries with the correct polarity to match these markings.
- Insert New Batteries: Place the new batteries into the battery compartment, ensuring they are properly aligned with the correct polarity. Press them down gently to make sure they are secure.
- Replace Battery Cover: After inserting the new batteries, close the battery compartment cover securely. If it has a latch or screw, make sure it is fastened properly.
- Test the Remote: Point the remote at the device it controls (such as a Toshiba TV) and test whether it responds to your commands. If the remote is working correctly, you have successfully replaced the batteries.
- Dispose of Old Batteries: If the old batteries are no longer usable, make sure to dispose of them properly. Many communities have designated recycling locations for batteries.
