I would check the power cable to ensure that nothing is broken. Then get your multimeter out and check to ensure that you are receiving 12-14.4 VDC to the plug that is inserted into the player. If both of those check out then you know it is the player itself. If you determine that it is the player, then you will need to open it up. Chances are that one of the capacitors have failed. You can normally tell because the case is swollen or leaking. If this is the case then you only need buy another cap and then replace it if you know how to solder.

Check if the fault is if the battery is well connected into the player.

The battery might not be good irrespective of it being a new one or not.

Also, The charger for your player might be defective.

You need to do a general troubleshooting in order to detect actually where the problem is coming from.

So, you can test the charger with another player of this kind, like wise the battery.

This seems like your "Backlight" is either faulty, or the power supply, or inverter driving it is faulty. This Make & Model isn't very well supported, i have searched the 'net, but have been unable to find a service manual, or any manual, which, one really does need, if only for the part numbers to reorder spares.
In saying that though, there is nothing "Special" about them all. They all use a fairly standard type parts. So if you disassemble, the unit, and locate the backlight, and they have a part number on them, you would be able to get the part, from Ebay, or by contacting the maker of the backlight directly. You really need to check the voltage is coming out of the driver, and it actually the lamp itself. But as I said before one really needs a service manual to be able to do that.

You seem to have trouble shot the problem yourself. You need to get a power supply to suit, have a look on the PSU, it should have Voltage and Amperage on it, say like 12 Volts 2.5 Amps.. Now simply get a supply with exactly the same Voltage, and the Current rating must be the same or HIGHER, It is usually the Plug, that may cause problems. usually Radio Shack, or the like, or eBay will have them.

It won't, it's not designed to read ****, just dvd and cd discs.

But if you have been trying to use it to read **** then you possibly have **** on the lens. It often happens when you use it as intended too.

Try using a regular lens cleaning disc first but if that doesn't work then either the laser or the head transportation system has failed.

They CAN be replaced, but Durabrand are one of those 'no name' ultra-budget brands which just buys in generic products from China and has it's name put on the front.

This means that the internal transport mechanism could be from any of a number of manufacturers. It'll cost you $25 or so just to have it opened up to try and identify whether spares are available, or if you're reasonably technically minded and have an anti static mat or wrist strap you could open it and check for yourself.

If parts are available, then they're likely to cost in the order of $40 -$45 plus shipping, and then you may have fitting costs as well. Sorry, but I'd argue that when you can buy a used portable DVD player in full working order for around $60 and brand new ones for around $90 then it's uneconomic to repair this one.

If you do throw the machine away, list the remote control handset on an auction website. You can often get an easy $15-$20 even for obscure brands like yours.
