Graeme - Greetings: this hack may or may not be any help to you as it will allow you to play DVD discs region free but not Blu-Ray discs.
Using the remote bring the player out of standby, make sure there isn't a disc in it. It should read "HOME" on the front panel.
Press 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 on the remote. The blue 24p light will start flashing on the front panel.
Put the player back into standby with the remote.
Turn on the player and it should be region free for standard DVD playback.
Apologies if this is not the fix your looking for. I'm now aware of any hacks to allow your player to play Blu-Ray discs region free.

Some (not all) DVD players have a manual open mechanism on them. It's a tiny hole under or near the DVD drawer where you can insert a stiff wire (straightened paper clip) straight in and push gently to force it open. Most PC CDROM drives have these; not sure about Blue Ray players.

It would be good if you go for local service to save money..
