Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Digital Camera freezes when importing pictures
Try downloading the current software for you model from the Canon site. You could try inserting the memory card into the card reader on your computer and if you get the same result then it would appear to be a software problem that you use to download. Sometime conflicts appear.
When I attempt to download photos from my camera
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa:
Organize edit and share your photos
Camera does not recognize memory card
I hope you were able to upload your images to your computer before this problem occurred. It could be that there is a corrupted file on the card. Have you tried to format the card on the computer before trying it in the camera?
Cannot see through viewfinder or LCD Screen
Does it still shoot photos "in the blind?" No, I do not know what is wrong. If you were to have said only the LCD screen was broke, that can often can be an easy do it yourself fix. There is a company on ebay, I think there store is in Illinois, that sells brand new screens for only 15 bucks. On youtube there is video that shows the surprisingly simple repair. Only tool you really need is a super tiny phillips screwdriver, one small enough for eyeglass repair, and be darned careful not to lose the tiny screws! But in your case the repair may or may not work because you say the viewfinder also is on the fritz. Best of luck.
I put in new batteries in but 5 mins later it says low battery and turns itself off.
I have the same problem. Canon support claims they have never had this problem before, but it is all over the Internet. I won't be buying another Canon for the support, although the camera is sweet. I have tested everything I can see including the batteries and there's nothing wrong with the batteries. However, when I eyeball the height of the batteries, I see that one is lower than the others. So I assume that this connection is not as solid as the rest and may be why low battery indicator shows even when the batteries are testing fully charged. On the SX20 you can't bend down the terminals at the top, so you have to reach in to the bottom and bend the contacts on the short battery up. I believe that this is just a temporary solution because it doesn't fix my camera permanently. But try it. It is a free fix and can't hurt. IMHO
