Without call waiting or a second line, callers will get a busy signal if you're already on a call. This happens at the switchboard; it doesn't matter what type of answering machine you have because the second call doesn't get that far.You can record your own message on the 1739 but, as mentioned above, if you're already on a call then the second call never gets that far.

Press and hold SETUP until you hear the first announcement, which is the language. Press right/left arrow to change the language.

Press and hold CLOCK until the message window displays C, and the default day is announced.
To change the day setting, press MEMO/REPEAT or ANNC/SKIP until the correct day is announced.
Press CLOCK. The current hour setting is announced. The correct day setting is saved.

Check the optioning to make sure that Number Announce is still set to On.

While it is customary to connect a telephone to the answering machine, you should be able to use the 1739 as a stand-alone device.

The answering machine would plug into the telephone jack on the wall, and the telephone would plug into the jack on the rear of the answering machine.
Now you do mention that the telephones are multi-line units. This could complicate things a bit because the 1739 is a single line answering machine. If the telephone does not have individual jacks for each line (a jack for line 1 and another jack for line 2) you would need to purchase an adapter (maybe 2 of them...depending on the wall jack) that takes a 2 telephone lines and splits them into 2 individual jacks. For example: http://www.tti.net/computer-telephony/phone-accessories.html After the lines have been broken out, you can connect the answering machine to the line that needs it. You would then either plug the lines into their respective jacks on the wall, or use a 2nd splitter to combine the 2 lines back at the wall jack.

I don't see a specific question being asked, but I assume you want to know how to be able to stop the answering machine and the fax machine from answering calls @ the same time.

The easiest solution would be to order another telephone line and use it for the fax machine.

The only other option would be to purchase a device that "listens" for the polling beep that fax machines make and, if it hears it, sends the call to the fax. If it doesn't hear it, the call is sent to the answering machine.

The default security code is 500. To check your messages, dial your number, when the answer machine answers dial your code, the number of mesages will be annonced and then it will begin playback of messages. If the announcement continues after entering your code, wait for the announcement to end or press # to end the announcement, re-enter your code to listen to your messages.
