Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But,
here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

Having gone over a month without a response to my query, I assume my suggestion to get and use a card reader solved the problem.

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Canon ZoomBrowser or any other photo cataloging program.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a white screen is never any good when it comes to electronics, especially when its been reported dropped and the USB port is inside of it.
Basically your LCD has two main componets, the back light and the data cable. Sounds like your back lights working (hence the white light) but your screen isn't getting any data.. The chip inside might be damaged or the data cable is damaged.
If it's under warranty (like through Best Buy or Staples) you might have been up sold on a Accidental Warranty.. if so.. they'll honor it and get it fixed for you!
Check your receipts!

I am unable to download
If plugging it in doesn't automatically load the pictures to your computer (will depend on if the device is recognized and setup to transfer automatically), you can possibly copy them manually by going to My Computer and selecting your camera and dragging the images to the destination you want.
If it is not showing up in your computer you can also remove the memory card and put it in the appropriate card reader if you have one.
Lastly you can download the software for your camera from the manufacturer at:

Your camera almost certainly has a lens error, this
is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock
generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!
Stuck lenses are probably the most common
reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair
chance of recovering use of your camera again
The fault is
commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it
having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera
was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and
tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply
become
dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.
If your camera
is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse
then contact the Canon service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If
the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed
the
cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose
by
trying to fix this yourself.
Please click here
and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera
Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically
manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. Although the article
mentions Canon a few times, the advice applies equally to all cameras
with lens errors and is not model-specific.

Good
luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera, or
at least are able to use the information to help decide whether to buy
another camera. If you do
decide that you have to throw your camera away then don't forget to
remove the memory card as it can be used in other devices.

for you and
any testimonial which you might wish to add is always welcome.
"lens error turning off camera.
If the camera was dropped it can somehow seize the lens related parts since they are mostly made from plastic. It is also possible that particles like sand grains can go between the moving parts of the lens and seize the mechanism. Either case the repair could be expensive and may not worth having it done.

Please have the memory cards checked on with another PC and if detected have the cards
formatted. If so check your PC for any virus in the OS.
If there is no detection of the memory card then it is possible that the card detection slot reader is not contacting or a possible software error in the camera.

Good day,
This tip will explain how to remove the write protect from your SD Card.
This is a easy fix and won't take a minute.
First remove your SD Card from your device. You will see on the side of the SD Card that there is a small switch. If your SD Card complains about being write protected simply put the switch in the opposite position. Some of the SD Cards even have the word LOCK on near the switch indicating the direction the switch must be to LOCK the card.
Once the switch is changed you can put the SD Card back into your device and the problem of write protection would be solved.
Please feel free to let me know if this tip was able to help you!

New batteries camera goes on then off
This indicates a systems control board failure in the camera, the systems board controls vital areas of the camera, if new batteries won't power it up, it is time for a new camera.

Hello
The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the
probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.
Use
these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.
Firstly ,
try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.
Try holding the
shutter button while switching on the camera.
Look at the lens ,
and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then
try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).
Try gently
pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may
cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.
Another
way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and
then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to
not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and
down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the
camera is enough to get things going again.
Try hitting your
camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of
your hand.
Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair centre for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to
replace the camera.
If it is still under warranty I would suggest
you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any
off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about
warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope
the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need
any further assistance. Also, please be so kind to let me know if you
found this helpful.
