Blinking light on iomega external hard drive

Try plugging the unit into another working computer. If the same thing happens then the external drive is toast. U may be able to remove the drive with within the unit, set it up as a slave, install on working computer and possibly extract any and all needed files before throwing it out.

remove the HDD out of the caddy and plug into the inside of your PC then right click my computer and go to manage, in the left hand pane click disk management, now in the middle pane should be all your disks check if the HDD you plugged in is being recognised. now go to my computer and click on the new disk and check that everything Is their, if its not then the HDD is broke but if it is then the caddy is. if you cant see the disk in my computer and you can in mange try reformatting, this may bring the drive back to life but you will loose your data

How to avoid formatting drive

What did you format to,fat,fat32,NTFS,

I am not sure if your saying you had it on a desktop pc and now you plugged it into a laptop, or its always been on the same computer
and it just wants to format.

Either way, a computer should not want to format, usually you have to tell it to format, and the only reason to format a hard drive whether internal
or external ,is to change the file system from one to another,

example; FAT to NTFS , or your going to install a operating system to the hard drive.

Its sounds like you had it in a computer whether the same one or a different one, and you did not use the safely remove hardware, or you unplugged it while it was writing data back and forth.

Turn both off, the computer and external hard drive, plug the hard drive
into a different USB port, or firewire, how ever it connects.

Now turn on the external hard drive, wait a few minutes, now start the computer, once in windows if you see this I want to format you hard drive, tell it no, go to control panel and open devise MGR, and look for a yellow shield, under Universal serial bus controllers , the one that has a yellow mark, right click on it and choose properties, read what it says
in the open box, if it says disabled, enable it, if it says no driver,
click on driver tab, and click update driver.

I have a IOMEGA 1TB hard drive, and I formatted It

I would connect drive and from dos prompt run diskpart. Make sure you have extended dos partition that has the entire drive space. You can type at the dos prompt: diskpart ? for help. Once you have partitioned the whole drive format it with NTFS.

My Iomega 1tb drive now only shows invalid

first, recover your files with data recovery program like asoftech data recovery program. http://www.geardownload.com/system/asoftech-data-recovery.htmlI've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files. After you get back your files, you can then format the drive.

No power

w7

First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.

In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

for xp

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb but its not working

ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts hope this helps

HI,my ext hard drive iomega lphd-up which holds my saved data is not recognised on my pc running windows xp (from which the data was transferred )or my new pc running windows 7. Tried a few tips from

Hi Joyce,You must check to see if your PCs have the correct drivers installed and active for this external HD. For some reason, often the PC will "forget" that there is a driver already installed, and you need to re-install it to get the HD to be recognized. If the drive came with a separate CD, or Mini-CD, containing an install program, you might need to run it all over again. It cannot hurt to do so. Most of the time, they do not want your external drive plugged into the PC when you are running the install. Be sure to check the instructions or if you don't have them, go to the manufacturer's web site and find them by the model number, under Support.Let us know how it went?Cheers!-a.

The cable was left in the hdd and jostled around

You wont be able to source the part, you'll either have to take the drive out and put in in a new enclosure or replace the whole drive.
