The williams wall heater keeps
My heater has been doing the same thing. You do not need to remove the grille cover to reset it. Poke a small screwdriver through a vent slot and reset the small red button. Allow the heater to cool off before resetting. When the vent reaches 260 degrees, the switch cuts off the furnace. The solution is to place a fan pointed at the top and side of the furnace so it doesn't get scorching hot. It happened to my furnace continually when a strong, cold west wind was hitting my roof-top vent. When the storm passed after two days, the furnace operated normally again.

Won't stop ticking!!!! Why??
The noise could be from the expansion and contraction of the metal from heating up and cooling down. You could try loosen the mounting screws of the unit slightly to see if that helps.

Get a AA battery and tape a wire on each end, then attach the wires where the pilot generator wires to, mv/pv and pv usually,if it runs this way the valves good, the pilot generator makes 750mv or 3/4 of 1 volt, by the dissimilar metals in the pilot generators numerous thermocouples, they make 30mv each and are used on water heaters only now.Dont run it with the battery if you sleep! test only.

The "drip leg" is generally placed near the appliance, but that doesn't mean that it can't be placed in a more convenient location. However it must be dedicated only to that heating appliance.
Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Creating soot in house
Sooting is general caused by incomplete combustion. Which, most of the time is caused by a dust, lint and/or pet hair build up in the heater. It clogs the burners , as well as the air intakes. Thoroughly cleaning the interior of the heater and it's inner workings will generally solve the problem. Also, an less frequent ... low gas pressure to the heater can cause sooting. Burning scented candles while the heater is in operation contributes greatly to the soot problem and indoor air pollution.
The above should help you to further troubleshoot and solve the soot problem.

I'm unsure where to actually
OK, the knob is located on the gas valve. Now from the gas valve, look for a small dimeter aluminum tube that goes into the burner chamber. There may be a removable door that allows you to insert a long match or grill started into the burner chamber. Usually there is a red button that snaps and directs a spark to light the pilot. Maybe your is long gone or hiding in an awkward spot. Good luck.
