The manual should be helpful:
Brother XL 2600 Operation Manual
FWIW, not all machines have a needle "position" function even though they can make a zig-zag stitch. The home position is the center and the zig-zag selector just sets how wide the stitch will be.

Factory standard tension for upper thread is the midway point between the high and low number. However, that tension dial is meant to be used for tweaking tension. Generally, tweaking is required whenever the type of fabric, needle, or thread are changed, ie thicker fabric like denim should have a different upper tension setting than fine chiffon. To be successful with tension settings, one must become comfortable adjusting the upper tension.
NOTE: Accurate tension is achieved when the upper thread and bobbin thread meet in the middle of the fabric.

Most likely some computer software or hardware is malfunctioning. You could try to take it for service, but since a new machine can be purchased for less than $100, it may be more prudent to use it as a straight-stitch-only machine until you can afford to replace it.
...
In the event that changing the needle didn't determine the issue, have a go at rethreading the machine, guaranteeing legitimate pressure, and cleaning the bobbin region for any build up or garbage. On the off chance that the issue continues to happen, consider counseling the machine manual or looking for proficient help.
Question edited for clarity. A DB2 is a car made by Aston Martin, but this appears to be a sewing machine. All question need 'make model (what it is)' as first 3 words please.

Hi, the only reason I can think of is that it might be the fan belt that moves the arm that is causing the problem. Best to take it in to a professional to look at it for you. Good luck

Some machines do not have a centered needle as a default. That is just how they were made. If she can reposition the needle to the center, then that is a pretty good option. Most older machines with the offset needles default do not have a centering option. (I have an old Nelco that has an offset default--works just fine but I just have to remember that when stitching, the seam line will not be in the center of the presser foot.)
need to check the hook timing.
put it in zig zag, no fabric, turn the hand wheel to you slowly.
check the needle when it is coming back up, is the hook picking up the thread? if yes continue to check the next side, so if you check the left side then check the right. if any side its not picking up the thread then the timing is off and need to be retimed
