I have a dell inspiron

According to Dell the 7 beep codes indicate " CPU Cache test failure" which means your 1018 has a " CPU Failure". This can be caused by a defective CPU or the motherboard. I'm not positive but I believe the CPU is soldered to the motherboard hence the motherboard would have to be replaced.

This is a hard drive failure error. You can try starting in safe mode (Hit F8 BEFORE the Windows screen appears on startup) to save your files to a different location IF your computer will start at all. BUT your hard drive needs to be replaces ASAP.

Can speed be improved

how much memory is currently in the computer? If less than 2GB, consider adding memory (RAM) to the 2G maximum which will help. Otherwise, you can only clean out unnecessary startup programs, make sure your hard drive is not too full (keep at least 5GB hard drive space frr) and defragment your hard regularly. Also, check for malware and adware - try malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org) to clean out malware that slows down systems. Use the FREE version.
