So many things can be wrong, but after a restart nothing happens, you can deinstall the scanner client and then reinstall it. If the same thing happens again, perhaps you should start a windows recovery. For that keep the original windows DVD at hand. During the recovery, the system will detect if any program has an issue and replace it with a correct one from the Windows disk. (or even an updated one, if Microsoft released a newer one)
