Hello, the 2230 is a fine unit! There could be several things causing this problem, more than likely it could be dirty front controls which will require cleaning. It could be more serious problems such as pre-amp or main amp failures, dried up output coupling cap for the right channel. I would recommend having the unit serviced. do the basic test

-first connect the RCA cable into the auxiliary input power on the receiver
-connect the speakers to the speaker output of the receiver.
-set the volume into the maximum level
-touch the RCA cable input with your hand you should hear a loud humming sound when you touch the RCA plug.
-if no sound is heard the reciever is defective or you had connected it to the wrong terminal check your connection..

Intermittent problems are no fun to troubleshoot because you have to force it to fail or wait for it to show the problem. It sounds like it could be a thermal problem or a cold solder connection. Do you hear the sound through the headphone jack on the receiver when the speakers blank out? If so your pre amp section is working, and it is in the power amp section. Second, wait until the unit exhibits the problem then use a freeze spray selectively spraying parts of the board and components until the sound returns. You can use a heat gun sparingly to heat parts of the circuit to try to force it to fail. If you selectively freeze spray the board and sound returns you need to inspect the board for broken traces and touch up solder connections, which could be cold and faulty. CD/DVD players use a protocol; Open tray. Insert disk. Tray switch tells mechacon that the tray is shut. Attempt to focus on disk. If focus is acheived, then it will spin up and try to read the disk otherwise it will ask for a readable disk. If the tray keeps opening, I would suspect the tray detect switch is malfunctioning, maybe the drive belt has stretched.

6. try no speakers, to see if it trips.
7. It is 1999 and is old. even bad caps inside now.

Question edited for clarity and typo. Check the fuse in the plug (UK). Check power as far as the unit with a proximity tester. Look for a fuse in the back near where the mains cable enters.
