If the unit is set up for either(with the thermal trasnfer option- ribbon unwind and rewind assembly) you can use either ribbon- with thermal transfer stock, or direct thermal- with direct stock.
You can tell the stock by rubbing something across the stock to see if it will turn black, that is direct thermal stock.
If using direct, go into the setup and select media type- direct thermal.
If using ribbon- use thermal trasnfer option. But remember to install ribbon before calibration as ithe printer will error on out-of -ribbon.

printer must be calibrated or the type of sensor is wrong. Verify that
the sensor type is correct for your label (gap or black mark) and you
can calibrate it by pressing the FEED key for about 5 seconds
approximately.

If you are using direct thermal stock you do not need ribbon. Set the media type to direct not thermal transfer

Definitely. possible solution match the width of your label and ribbon. if your ribbon is wider for .5 inch it should be good.
1. check your spindle alignment, printhead alignment and rotate the green knob on the printhead while printing so that you'll see the difference.
Printhead leaves impressions but no print
Sounds like you've run out of ink? If not then the ink has become dry and clogged the head.
Try using a alcohol solution (white spirit or a strong liquor like vodka will suffice) with a piece of paper towel to clean the head of the ink cartridge, then try printing a few times until it works well.
Otherwise, sounds like the cartridge needs repalcement.

Datamax Program Language (DPL) uses pcx and bmp graphic formats. The Adobe image must be opened in Adobe Reader and print using a windows driver. Use the datamax windows driver from www.seagullscientific.com
