This is a 2 channel stereo unit. Ebay shows @ a dozen of them for sale between $46- $90. In davenport Iowa, which isn't an expensive area, you can't touch a repair for that. Check your area Our estimate fee alone is $43

How to connect Sony dvd player to onkyo TX-8511 receiver
The TX-8511 is an older AV receiver with only composite video inputs. Your DVD player may not provide this type of output as it's not capable of HD video. If your dvd player has a composite output with a Red, White & Yellow set of outputs, that will connect into the Video 2 inputs on the receiver. Your TV will need to connect up to the Video2 or Monitor output. You'll need a set of composite video cables with the red-white & yellow RCA type plugs.
Here is a link to the manual for this receiver:

No sound/can't get rid of "video 1" or "video 2"
I had the same issue... It turns out that there is light on the screen under the A and B speaker lights which said T-2 Monitor. This meant it was sending the sound out to the tape # 2 monitor... Hit the Tape 2 button and you are back in business...
The right channel has gone out on both the A and B output

How do I hook up my iphone 5s to my Onkyo TX-8511
You can use a DS-A5 iPod docking station or a RCA Y-adaptor found at retailers such as APPLE, BEST BUY, RADIO SHACK, AMAZON, etc.: http://www.amazon.com/APPLE-COMPOSITE-AV-cable-ZML/dp/B004EWEX9Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331155139&sr=8-1You can use a DS-A5 iPod docking station or a RCA Y-adaptor found at retailers such as APPLE, BEST BUY, RADIO SHACK, AMAZON, etc.: http://www.amazon.com/APPLE-COMPOSITE-AV-cable-ZML/dp/B004EWEX9Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331155139&sr=8-1 . PROTECT Mode issue
Here you can get the owners manual for the unit if you need it;
http://www.onkyousa.com/download/own_manuals.cfm?cat=Receiver
For the protect mode to kick in only for some input sources, then there would have to be a fault in one or more of the pre-amp circuits - there will be a separate one for the radio tuner.
Probably the solution for such a good unit is to contact the manufacturers and see what they have to say - probably they will suggest you send it in for service and i suspect they would be right - here are the contact details if you happen to be in the US;

or through this link if not;

Hope this helps and you get an answer from them - it is probably fixable relatively easily and shouldn't be expensive for parts :)
