The TX-8511 is an older AV receiver with only composite video inputs. Your DVD player may not provide this type of output as it's not capable of HD video. If your dvd player has a composite output with a Red, White & Yellow set of outputs, that will connect into the Video 2 inputs on the receiver. Your TV will need to connect up to the Video2 or Monitor output. You'll need a set of composite video cables with the red-white & yellow RCA type plugs. I had the same issue... It turns out that there is light on the screen under the A and B speaker lights which said T-2 Monitor. This meant it was sending the sound out to the tape # 2 monitor... Hit the Tape 2 button and you are back in business...

Connect from the headphone port of the iPhone and use the red & white RCA audio cables to connect into the RCA audio input terminals of your TX-8511.

Make sure you have not put it into tape monitor mode.
