Onkyo TX-DS696 Receiver Questions & Answers
Playing a blu ray disk
Hi there,
In theory, your receiver's decoder should be able to automatically "detect" the incoming audio format. But, this only occurs if the device playing the disc is sending the correct audio format.
So, with this said, there should be a fun tion on your PS3 where you can manually select either Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1. Both of these are opposing formats (i.e. can only output one format at a time).
If you were to play a movie disc from a standard DVD player into your Onkyo receiver, you would normally have to manually select DTS 5.1 audio from the disc menu.
Does the PS3 menu allow you to manually select the audio output?
My display wont work and
for this problem please call to your manufacturer customer suppport for technician to rectify thre problem because it is the internal problem so i advise do not open the cabinet of your channel receiver
When i turn it on it says protect and it turns off
Hello,
Usually a protect fault will indicate a bad transistor in the amplification section. I suspect that the control circuit is sensing a fluctuation in the power supply and going in to protect mode. (assuming that the protect circuit itself is working properly) If a voltage is too high the unit will go in to protect mode to prevent damage to the speakers and the rest of the unit. I would take the unit in to a local repair shop and get a estimate of repair charges.
Hope this helps.....
Onkyo TX-DS696. No right channel speaker sound
hello there 2 transistor 1 for the right channel and 1 for the left first thing 2 do is a visual check in good light check for any burn't part or any bulging capacitors if everythink looks ok then check underneath the board for dry joints if then you will need a mulitmeter to start testing components

How to hook up my subwoofer
It sounds like you're doing everything right. Did you define the sub to the Onkyo (Subwoofer = Yes, page 22)?
Let's prove the sub works. Set its volume about half-way, cutoff= 170Hz. Temporarily connect an RCA cable from its Line Input to one of the Tape Out connectors on the Onkyo and play some FM through it. If it's alive you'll hear the low end of the music.
Don't buy into the hype that there are different pedigrees of RCA (or speaker) cables that will make an audible difference. Save your money.
Sound skipping while playing Blu Ray
HI, make sure the audio out put on the ps3 is set to hdmi and set to stream dolby digital, aac, dts, etc, then set audio input on your 696 to hdmi, also check that audio out for hdmi is set to off in the hardware menu on your amp,if you still have problems use the optical out on the ps3 as the ps3 does not out put hd master audio or dolby true hd only pcm, you will still get dolby digital.
hope this helps.

No sound when dvd input is selected on onkio tx-ds696
Make sure your DVD setting is looking at the right audio inputs. Usually there is a menu option or a button to toggle from analog or digital input. Usually when no-sound but video ok, you have the wrong input-type selected. If you are using 2 RCS's (red/white) then you want ANALOG input mode. If you are usung a single RCA (orange) or a fiber optic input for audio, you want DIGITAL input selected. If digital os selected, make sure you plug into the correct digital input to hear. If it does not work at first, mofe the jack/fiber around into the different inputs untill you hear sound, then you will know which port is associated with the DVD setting. Unless it is self evident feom the menu.
No Output (Where is the protection circuits?) i.e. speaker fuses or breakers.
The output transistors should be mounted to the heatsink in the rear. These should be changed as complimentary pairs. If you have a diode checker or an ohm meter, check these transistors for a shorted condition. Depending upon why the protection circuit is kicking in, you may need to change some components in the driver circuit too. The transistors used here should be readily available. I don't have the service manual with me at the moment, so I can't give you the exact part numbers.
Let me know if you need more info.
Dan
