Possibilities: Grit or dirt has jammed the space inside, where the spring is. If it overheated, plastic may have melted / warped, causing a jam. what brand is it ?most have a slide switch in top to put in hammer mode .might have a slide lever by the trigger for reversing

think perhaps a tiny magnet thru the chuck of mechanics metal finger thingy

open check as far as you can and look inside if there is a screw it needs removed all reversable drill have them and it will be a left hand thread

Is the belt nice and tight? Is the belt on the pulleys that are in line with each other? Does the pulley on top of the chuck spindle turn? The chucks are held in by a Morse taper, often there is a half moon key, on the shaft somewhere that is meant to shear if too much force is applied.
