Check if message retrieval works with a landline phone. If that works, then either the tones generated by your cellph are too far off frequency, or the cell network is filtering out or compressing too much of the tones.

See if somebody is selling one on google and find out if they have directions. Maybe you can work something out.

You might as well replace the phone as you can't get any parts to repair it from the defunct Radio Shack.

It's radio shack... kidding, depending upon the age of it, the lcd black/grey display may have gone bad... from dropping or age or defect.

Look on the phone and the base. Most phones have a small almost hidden switch to turn off the ringer. It is usually a tiny slide switch on the side or back of the handset but I have seen them on the base also.

I'm familiar with the Tandy 43-165 sold by Radio Shack. It is one of the few phones ever made that has a headset jack built in. (Which is very rare.)

First, I'm going to give you the link to review your User Guide (just in case you don't have one.)

I've tried to remember if the phone has the option to choose the number if rings before the call is diverted to Voice Mail. (I don't believe it does) But if it does, on the top 2 rows (of 5 buttons) the option would be located by pressing the (up) or (down) arrows. If the option is available, select the number if rings then press the OK/C button to confirm.

If no option exists for the number of rings - and you have an answering machine - the option may be with your answering machine.

Next step: If neither of the two options mentioned above work - try unplugging your phone and plugging another one in its place. Then, call your phone and see if the other phone rings MORE than once. If it does, the problem is with your Tandy 43-165 and it may need to be repaired or replaced. If the other phone ONLY rings once - then goes to Voice Mail - go to the next step.

If you use voice mail as part of your phone service, contact your service provider and request Tech Support. Note: I wouldn't mention that you think the problem is with your phone. Instead, simply inform Tech Support that you only receive one ring before the call diverts to Voice Mail and you may need them to re-set your voice mail account.

When setting up your voice mail after re-set, check to see if there's an option for the number of rings before the call is diverted.

In short, I believe the problem may not be with your Tandy phone - but, by trying another phone in its place, you'll find out quick enough.

There is a small electric condenser microphone in you mother's phone where she talks, and the part has become defective. Radio Shack use to carry three types, but whether they are still available is anyone's guess. If you are handy with a soldering iron all the better because if you find one, the phone will be given extended life, I have fixed dozens with good success.

It most likely is that the batteries are about shot.One thing you can try is unplug the phone base for about 5 minutes.When you plug it back in,you may have to set all the handsets back on the base for a few seconds to re-synch them again.If that doesn't work,it's probably the batteries.Since 5.8 gHz is fairly recent,you can probably find replacements.Make sure they have the same exact rating if you do.Mine is 3.6V,650 mAh.That is just an example of what you specifically want to match,both numbers.The brand isn't as important as the numbers.They are also likely to be Ni-MH.It means nickel metal hydrade.Most current batteries are probably that anyways but just something else to watch for.Also,buy as many as you need but first try only one to see if it fixes it.Surprisingly,3 years for these phone batteries is about all they last.Just from knowing that makes me question how effective the electric cars will really be.If you end up replacing your phones,DECT is the new technology but from what I have seen isn't all that.They seem more hype than good according to problems I have seen.Some of the better ones are AT&T,Panasonic,GE,perhaps Motorola and Verizon though.We are waiting for a good sale on them though or to buy an older model.I have not read anything about Radio Shack brand as far as problems if they have one.If you need more help,just comment here and I will get an autolink to your post and reply ASAP.

Here's what I would suggest:

1. Press Talk/Flash to get a dial tone
2. Press *72
3. Wait for dial tone
4. Dial the number you want to forward
5. Wait for a beep
6. Hang up

Is this a standalone answering machine or a phone with answering machine built in? Are you certain that is the catalog number and there is no other reference to a model number? That number does not pull anything up, but it's possible you are correct, just want to verify.
