Memory card error
Yes you can have dammaged the contacts in the memory card holder.
The some or all contacts could be bend, or even the switch (feeler notch) can be pusshed in or broken.
It is difficult to explain, that is why I also put a picture inhere.
You should use a light, and a magnifying glass to look in your camera.
The picture is from a memory card reader, but in your camera it should look the same. You can see nine contacts, and to the left on the picture you can see they look like a triangle. All contacts should look like thatand not one is allowed to be bend or have a dent.
When you look in the memory slot, to the right (not on the picture) you should see a little notch. That is the notch that reads the lock switch. Telling the camera the card is locked or unlocked.
If that part is missing, or broken, or inside the camera that switch is dammaged, your camera will keep telling you there is a card error.
Waht could you do?
If one of the nine contacts is down, toy could try to get it up again, perhaps with a small needle. But please don't open the camera. You could do even more damage, if you are not skilled in that. If you can't fix it, contact a pentax certified repair centre and ask them what it will cost and how long it will take to repair.

You don't need any software. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as
Picasa.

How to turn on date
The camera won't deface your photos by scrawling a string of numbers on them. Depending on the program and printer you use to print your photos, you can print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back. Please refer to the documentation for the program.
If you're printing directly from the camera, you can turn on the date stamp by checking the "Date" box as described in the "Setting the Printing Service" section in the camera manual (page106) in my copy.
