Minolta 3600HS (D) TTL Flash Questions & Answers
I just put brand new
Sounds as if there is a malfunction in the flash. The batteries are in the correct orientation, aren't they ?
Speedlight
In your Speedlight you can use 4 AA sized batteries.
Alkaline, Lithium and rechargeable NiMH batteries.
Be sure your batteries are charged, or new. Never use different type together. So all 4 should be same brand, same capacity and same date.
When you did not use the speed light for a long time, two things could have happened. The contacts in the battery holder are dirty, or oxidised or the capacitor for the high voltage has leaked or dried out.
The contacts you can clean if they are not oxidised to strong. Never use sharp tools to sanding paper to clean contacts. Just use a dry cloth. It the contacts are really dirty, put some contact oil on a cotton swap and rub the contacts for a while. Make sure you rub all the oil away, using the dry cloth.
If old batteries, can't make the Speedlight sing, yes you should hear an oscillator, the on / off switch can be dirty or oxidised. If the oscillator runs, but the ready light does not go on, the capacitor is gone. Needs a technician to replace the cap.
Startup problem
I have the same problem with this flash. In a couple of days I'll find out what's wrong with it, and write here.
Minolta 404si Dynax doesn't shoot
It sounds like you may have an issue with the shutter mechanism, most likely caused by a worn out or dirty shutter. I would recommend taking it to a professional camera repair shop to have it checked out. They may be able to diagnose the issue and repair it or, if necessary, replace the shutter.
If you are not comfortable with taking it to a professional, you can try to diagnose the issue yourself by taking a few test shots with the camera on a tripod in different lighting conditions. If you are able to get some consistent results (e.g. the shutter always fails to fire at the same point or in the same lighting conditions) then you may be able to narrow down the problem and focus your troubleshooting efforts.
