Microsoft Windows XP Professional for PC Questions & Answers
Missing letters on computer screen
If there was any warranty on the refurbished desktop and monitor and if such still applies, return it for a replacement.
Either the video card in the desktop computer is going bad or the monitor has issues. If the monitor has issues, they might involve 1) a focus wire to the CRT; 2) a power supply going bad 3) a problem with the focus control.
What can you do? You start trying to rule out possibilities. You try swapping out the monitor with another monitor. If that fixes the problem, then the desktop computer's video card is unlikely the problem. If there is a power supply going bad yielding inadequate voltage, then possibly neither the desktop video card nor the monitor is at fault. If you take your monitor and plug it into another computer that has the ports similar to your desktop computer and the monitor has no fadeouts, then the problem is either the desktop computer video supply or the power supply. So, there actually is a non-technical way to determine if the monitor is at fault. But that would leave you wondering if the computer was at fault, video card or power supply. Some video cards were integrated, i. e. could not be removed. You could download and run Speccy to find out some information about the video and lookup the specs on the internet although they are unlikely to be at the manufacture's site at this point. Whether you have someone at a computer club who would check these remaining components out or swap them out is a question I can't answer. You are pretty close to the point of needing to just get an inexpensive tablet or something from a classifieds paper such as Trading Post or Gumtree (Australian). But if it is running XP, don't pay over $100 for it. (Inside joke: the military may still use XP but that is defensible.) I hope this helps.

How do I down load I-con for Netflix on my laptop
I'm confused as to what's wrong.
You went to Netflix.com and downloaded / installed but no icon showed up? Or your watching directly from Netflix? Do you have a shortcut with no icon on your desktop? Or you have no shortcut at all?
What OS are you using?
Below is for Windows XP / 7
To fix you have short cut with no icon you can follow steps below or download it again and re-install
Open Internet Explorer or any web browser and go to
http://findicons.com/search/netflix. Click the image you wish to use and download the ico version.
Right click the shortcut to Netflix on your desktop and click change icon. Browse to the ico file you saved.
There are other icon sites out there. This is the first one I found that SEEMED safe to use, but I do not own the site.
To fix your watching directly from Netflix with no shortcut or icon.
Right click on your desktop and click create shortcut
copy and past this
https://www.netflix.com/Login?locale=en-US
name it Netflix.
If I got your needs all wrong please explain more.

What operating system do I need, so that when I run my cursor along the menu bar a window pops up, rather than a small text box?
How do I get the Aero desktop experience?
The following editions of Windows 7 include Aero:
- Windows 7 Enterprise
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- Windows 7 Professional
- Windows 7 Ultimate
Aero is not included in Windows 7 Home Basic or Windows 7 Starter. You can find out which edition of Windows 7 you have on your computer by opening System in Control Panel.
The edition of Windows 7 you're running is displayed under Windows edition near the top of the window.
You also need to use a Windows theme to display Aero graphics. If you are using an Ease of Access theme, some elements such as transparency and thumbnail previews will not appear. To view which theme you are using, open Personalization in Control Panel.
The theme currently in use is highlighted.

How do i unfreeze my scrabble game
Programs occasionally freeze-up and become unresponsive because an error takes place that can't be handled. Unfortunately, the only solution is usually just to close the window, which means losing your game session.
Click the X button on the top right-hand side of the window to close the window. If it does not close on its own, you'll need to restart your computer. Click the Start button, then click on Restart. Once your computer is back up and running, try playing your game again.
