Unfortunately it goes with the territory of buying top loader machines. Underneath the agitator is a gearbox and clutch full of waterproof grease. It is below the water so there has to be seals to stop ingress of water. Your seals need replacing. It is not really a job for the home mechanic as all of the case has to come off, the drum lifted off to even get to the gearbox. It also needs custom tools. I had a clutch replaced under warranty and sat in the kitchen watching the engineer. When It came time to replace our dryer, I bought matching Whirlpool front loaders and they actually take more clothes and use a fraction of the water and electricity. Costco won't touch your claim because it is well out of Whirlpool Warranty. It is part of wear and tear and maintenance. A good service engineer can do the job in about an hour and a quarter.
