Zenith R50W46 50" Rear Projection Television - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

The smell could be the ballast or the bulb got really hot and went out. The repair process involves troubleshooting with special meters etc. You may be able to spot something that burned out though.

I have the same issue. TV will come on but will not stay on. I have Charter Cable. Do any others have this issue? Please help [email protected]

In a tube type projection set either the red tube or a issue on the circuit board that connects to that tube.

Since I have seen this question listed more than one time with different model numbers, so not to waste my time PROVIDE the actual model and brand.

Check settings speakers are not OFF or set to externalCheck to see if anything connected to a rear audio/video input has sound.Note if that fails this set was prone to the audio ouput Ic chip failing-saw several bad ones.

See if you have sound with a DVD connected to one of the rear audio/video inputs----rules some things out.Check in menu to see if speakers are switched to OFF or to External.

first Trun up the screen, is you see vertical colapse IS because you not ertical Drive..

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

1. Wet a soft cloth in a mixture of lukewarm water and a little fabric softener or dish washing
detergent. Wring the cloth until it's almost dry, and then use it to wipe the screen.
2. Make sure the excess water is off the screen, and then let it air-dry before you
turn on your TV.

Remove back on bottom of chassis on left hand SIDE THAT SHOULD BE THE Deflection Board it has FBT flyback Transfomer
Check CP150 2200uf 16v use 25v capacitor ,If this capacitor is swollen,vented or puffed up on Top it is Bad replace it and CP114 CP120 they are either 220uf 35v or 330uf 35v .

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions. They have put together complete kits for most models that include the parts, step by step photo instructions, repair assistance, etc.

Your convergence IC's are out and this is why you can't use the auto or manual convergence. This type of repair done at a verified Zenith service shop most likely will run you $400.00 to $500.00 dollars. However, if you have some electronic skills and are familiar with soldering and de-soldering, you can do the repair yourself for around $85.00 to $100.00. You will need to buy a convergence repair kit which has all the parts you need and gives pretty straight forward instructions. Plus, if you run into trouble, they have online support. This is not really a hard task to do. It usually takes about 2 to 3 hours from start to finish if you take your time and make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

Again, if you don't have any sort of electronic skills, it is always better to have the unit serviced by a professional.

Unfortunately the image can't be removed because it literally is burned into the picture tubes. You'd have to replace them which isn't cheap.

I read in the manual that you can turn the speakers off using the menu command when you connect up an external stereo system. You might want to check if this menu command inadvertantly was set to off. good luck

very simple 1 check spekar &its connection for loose contact 2 sound section supply. 3 parts near ic might be defective near sound section.

Try to use the manual search on the remote. If you do not find the code that way, then you are stuck using two remotes as if the set is compadable with that remote, it will be pre preogrammed into the remote as you do not program the remote. You only retrive codes that are already in the remote.
