Printer doesn't work at all. Status light is red.
A voltage surge often accompanies a power cut and even when surge protection is used sensitive electronics can be damaged. Often the damage is such that the item doesn't fail immediately, or doesn't completely fail.

Dear djmeyhem01,
Here are some solutions that might help you with your problem:
-Try the 'clean cardridge' option. This will clean the tubes of the cardridges.
-Check if the settings on the printer and on the PC/Mac are the same. Especially check the settings for printing. (there probably is some sort of option where you can check on printing tearing or lines in the printing.)
-Check cardridges. (are they empty? are they connected right?)
-Check if the software/hardware is working properly. If not, try a reinstall or a factory reset.
I hope this will help you in solving your problem!

According to the manual:
"Push the Go switch and the Job Cancel switch at the same time during the service call and hold them. And then push the 2 key additionally to show the service call type by LED combination."

RED Status +:
Toner LED = Fuser (Fixing Unit)
Drum LED = Laser
Paper LED = Main Motor
YELLOW Status +:
Toner LED = Main PCB
Drum LED = Engine PCB
Paper LED = DIMM
All of which are expensive parts and also expensive repair.

Brother HL 5170DN Printer Toner error
Trick Brother HL 5170DN printer into think there is toner left. Rather than run out for a new toner cartridge use a small (.5 x .5 in.) piece of black electrical tape to cover the sensor hole on the non-gear side of the cartridge. By covering the hole the printer is fooled into thinking the hopper is full of toner.
