check the paper sensor maybe stuck

Hello,

This printer is almost 10 years old. The original drivers are for Windows 3.1, 95/98, or NT 4.0. Not sure how XP is handling it.

When you go to print and get the print window, you should be able to select Properties (or Preferences) and there should be either a Quality tab or an Advanced tab.

This is where you should be able to change the resolution to 600X600.

You are not going to get a newer driver for this because of the age, but you still should be able to get 600 DPI out of it.

Bonjour, réponse en français je suis pas bon en anglais je mettrai une traduction en anglais juste après, donc la solution est d'installer manuellement le driver de la HL 1250 de Vista cela fera fonctionner la HL 1240 mais avec les 600 dpi (pour information la 1250 est à 1200 dpi mais bridée à 600 dpi sous vista)

Hello, response in French I am not good in English I will put a translation in English immediately following, therefore the solution is to install manuellement to drive it HL 1250 of Vista that will do to work the HL 1240 but with the 600 dpi (for information the 1250 is at 1200 dpi but bridled to 600 dpi under vista)

HiTurn it off and on.Check through the paper paths and clear any paper jam.Try disconnecting the printer.Leave it for like 2 hours and then connect it again.

in most case this kind of issues arise if your drum is not cleaned properly with the wiper. As the printer becomes old, the wiper that cleans the drum might get reduced in size...
so it has to be checked at the first.

Service manual: ready and alarm blinking :
Paper Jam
Clear the paper jam and press the panel button if the printer
does not automatically resume printing.
Misfeed:
Re-install the paper and press the panel button.

Clear the jammed paper inside the printer. Press the panel button
if the printer does not automatically resume printing.

check the sensors:
1) Turn off the printer power switch, open the front cover, and remove the drum unit.
2) Turn on the printer while pressing the control panel button. The Drum LED comes ON.
3) Lightly press the panel button again.
Alarm LED is ON = Front registration sensor is turned ON.
4) Press and release the panel button again.
Drum LED is ON = Paper eject sensor is turned ON.

If sensors are On, paper is being detected, Off- no paper

If it's printing gibberish, you need to restart both printer and computer and then make sure you clear the printer cue in the computer.

From the Service manual:

Toner low: The Data and Alarm LEDs blink once every five seconds.
Toner empty: The Data and Alarm LEDs blink once every second.

Alarm & Data LEDs are ON: Toner empty

Sound like your drum is gone. I just had to put mine to it's grave. Drum cost more then the printer is worth!

Alarm and Data lights both on solid indicates, out of toner. Toner cartridge needs replacing. Visit the link below to download a user manual for your printer.

The following cleaning steps are recommended:
1. Open the front cover and remove the drum/toner unit.
2. Gently wipe the scanner window with a soft dry cloth. The scanner window is located on the roof of the inside of the printer.
3. On the top of the drum unit, locate the blue tab on the left side. Slide it back and forth across the drum about 30 times and replace it inthe home position on the left side of the drum/toner unit.
4. Remove the toner cartridge (TN430 or TN460) from the drum unit (DR400). To remove the toner from the drum: hold down the blue lever on the right side of the drum (DR400) and lift the toner (TN430 or TN460) off.
5. Inside the drum unit (DR400) there is a green roller. Wipe the green drum roller with a dry tissue (i.e. Kleenex). You may turn this roller by moving the black/white gear on the far left side.
6. If you are still experiencing gray pages or gray vertical lines, please install a brand new toner cartridge (TN430 or TN460).

Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brotherlimited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the useof unauthorized third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.
